    This is what I found...

Washington State University researcher Charles G. Edwards has discovered a bacterium that may hold a partial key to controlling wine fermentation and spoilage rates without the use of sulfite chemicals. Discovery of Lactobacillius nagelii came as part of Edwards' ongoing search for unidentified spoilage bacteria. With funding from the Washington Wine Advisory Committee and the Northwest Center for Small Fruit Research, Edwards' lab is screening samples from stalled fermentation batches for bacteria that inhibit the growth of yeast, the microorganism that ferments juice into wine. Lactobacillus is a genus made up of rod shaped bacteria that produce lactic acid as a product of metabolism. "They are one of the few groups of microorganisms that can grow in wine and grape juice," Edwards said. "Both of those environments are very inhospitable to most microbes." Researchers are studying Lactobacillus because they are one of the causes of "stuck," or sluggish, alcoholic fermentations sometimes encountered by winemakers. The problem is of increasing interest because many winemakers are trying to reduce or eliminate sulfite from their wines.

Seems to be a digestive aid of some kind, much like the heatlhy cultures found in yogurt, good for digestion and good for the overall body system.

true, although lactobacillus is just the genus, nagelii is the species. This particular bacteria is not the ones added to yogurts or your protein powder although it could just as well have been.

Scenario: you gut is host to a number of microbes; some good and some not so good and others downright nasty. they are all in there at any given time. When things are right, the percentage of good microbes is greater than the percentage of nasty ones. When one of these things start to out number the others, bad things start to happen to the host. the host is YOU. the jury is still out on which exactly comes first, the bad thing happens, then leading to an increase in the nasty microbes or the increase in nasty microbes leads to bad things happening to you. H pylori is an example of a bad microbe.

Lactobacillus is a good microbe up to a certain point. anyone taking antibiotics is now advised to add these cultures to your diet. so its a good thing. you have to take a huge amount for any benefit really. 2 -4 billion count is about average tab dose.

Pro biotic means essentially _ conducive to living.. so they are saying that it supports living or good for you.

think of these critters as having a double benefit; they beat up the bad microbes ( in a round about way) and they themselves are a source of protein for you.
