"WASHINGTON - Sales of ephedra must stop by early April, the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) said Friday in finalizing its ban of the herbal stimulant.


In the meantime, "do not take these products. They are simply too risky," warned FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan.


Ephedra has been linked to 155 deaths and dozens of heart attacks and strokes.


The FDA first announced in December that the ban was coming, but on Friday issued a regulation formally setting it in motion. The law requires a phase-in period, and the FDA says sale of ephedra will become illegal on April 12.


It is the government's first-ever ban of a dietary supplement. "

It says "sale of ephedra will become illegal..." Any word on possession? Not that I can imagine the feds knocking your door in for a bottle of ephedra.

Since this is a federal action, doesn't it trump state law?

I thought that's whay it such a big deal. It's the first time the FEDERAL gov't has taken action against a supp.

Isn't it like the various marijuana propositions--it's sort of legal in the state, yet federally illegal? And interstate transportation compunds the problem and gives Fed the upper hand?

Yeah, I don't see any agents scouring San Bernadino for Ephedra buyers...knocking on doors with Ma Huang sniffing dogs.

I think they're going to crack down on online retailers heavily, though.

it's already illegal in CA, NY and IL but soon it'll be a nationwide ban.

There are hundres of deaths around the world every year caused by peanut alergies. YuP! Good old fashioned peanut butter can kill you!!

I've got about 10 bottles of San Ephedrine that I aquired after I first read about the ban. OH< The government tells me to stop taking it right now even though I've used ephedra since the 80's and have never had a problem.

Guess the government knows what's best for me!

The only ephedra or ephdrine that is safe is what is found in the cold or alergy pills (like sudaphed which is psuedoephedrine)and is sold over the counter by the drug companies.

Anything else that is derived from an ephedra extract is gone.

Was on a Ephedrine buying Frenzy before it was to late... Now, I've got enough stocked up to last 10 years!!
