FDA releashes statement on andro!!!!!!

FDA to try to stem sales of supplement andro
Thursday, March 11, 2004 Posted: 10:37 AM EST (1537 GMT)
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government will crack down on the steroid-like supplement made famous by baseball's Mark McGwire, telling companies Thursday to quit selling androstenedione unless they can prove it's not dangerous.
Commonly called andro, the product is a steroid precursor -- the body uses it to make testosterone.
That means it poses the same health risks as directly using an anabolic steroid, the Food and Drug Administration is expected to say in warnings telling 23 manufacturers to cease their production.
Anabolic steroids, which build muscle, are controlled substances. But andro -- because it is a precursor, not the steroid itself -- has long been marketed as a dietary supplement, selling over the counter. U.S. law lets dietary supplements sell with little oversight to ensure they're safe.
But the FDA is citing a seldom-used provision of that law that defines as a dietary supplement natural ingredients that were on the market before 1994 -- and says manufacturers must prove that any new ingredients are safe before selling them as supplements.
Andro wasn't on the market in 1994 and thus its makers failed to follow the law's safety provision, said a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services.
The FDA expects its action to at least temporarily halt andro sales. Meanwhile, Congress is considering legislation sponsored by Sen. Joe Biden, D-Delaware, that would permanently end over-the-counter sales of andro, as well as a new steroid named THG, and subject them to the same prescription restrictions as apply to anabolic steroids.
Andro's use skyrocketed after McGwire said he used it in 1998, the year he hit a record-setting 70 home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has said he later quit the supplements.
Medical studies show andro does raise testosterone above normal levels. Side effects of elevated testosterone include acne, baldness, and a drop in the so-called good cholesterol that could lead to heart disease.
Critics are especially concerned about andro's effects if taken by children while they're undergoing puberty.

I just saw this also!

Here we go..... Notice it does say androstenedione, not androstenediol like 4-AD. Wonder which 23 companies they are?

I love that last line "Critics are especially concerned about andro's effects if taken by children while they're undergoing puberty."

I guess that means the 'critics' are ok with the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and OTC medications if taken by children.

that part just cracks me up...the only thing those early versions of Andro did is raise estrogen levels.

Apparently some of the supplement companies are going to court over the ephedra ban. This is just ridiculous but you knew it would happen. Now some stupid senator will propose a bill and pretend like he cares about people. All this is going to do is make those same "children" go to black market sources for real anabolic steroids which are more dangerous for them and not to mention some of the people they'll be dealing with. Why would anyone use and illegal pro-hormone instead of an illegal steroid?

back for the first time....

That just made me think about something. The gov will shit a brick when and if they found out that the stuff we use now is a million times better than andro. Which is bad for us, cause they will go after all of like a pitbull.

I bet anyone 10 bucks that creatine and protein powder will be next on their list to get rid once they take our precious ph's. Especially since the statement is floating around that these 2 products can ruin you kidneys.

They need to let the FDA have it and kill this quietly. If they try to go nuts defending it, and it becomes as newsworthy as the ephedra ban, theyre likely to go after all PH/PS.

I personaly wouldn't mind andro's being gone, but it just keeps the ball rolling for the next thing and the next thing they want to ban. I think andro's should have been banned before ephedra.

No I don't use steroids... But thanks for asking.

They could be making money off other supps that work better if they let this go. If they fight this and get everything banned, then they have nothing.

I stand corrected.

Why dont they ban alchol or cigarettes. We know how many people are killed each year from these. Why bother with supps. when there are so many other things that are far worse.

Seriously Flex, Im with you on that. They wont ban nicotene, or alcohol when they kill millions of people who use them, on top of hundreds of thousands that die from second hand smoke and drunk drivers (etc.).

If these drugs kill innocent people every day in record numbers, why doesnt the gov. do anything to correct THAT?

I suspect there will be a run on PHs. Umph, lets see, 4 cycles a year, for 10 years, thats 80 bottles of MT1, enter credit card No. and I will be set. Hope they give us a 6 month period before the reguations take effect so Bulk Nutrition can get thru the back log of orders.....

Just remember that once the PH/PS steroids are banned, make sure yours is on the list or not. They probably will be blanketed as "all illegal"/

If it is, it will be a schedule III felony for possession, regardless of when you purchased it. It cannot be grandfathered in. You will have a choice to consume them or flush em.

Not that the feds are gonna come busting down the doors of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who bought the product before it were banned. They have much bigger fish to fry.

Just dont go toting around that you have 50 bottles of M1t stashed away after it is banned. You might draw a little attention to yourself. It is not worth getting in any kind of trouble over.

I am staying away from PH/PS altogether.

I hope like hell you're right. But between the THG 'scandal', ephedra ban, and the Anabolic Control Act of 2003, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Here is an excerpt which is the proposed amendment to the original Anabolic Control Act. These guys are not leaving it at dione.

SEC. 2. AMENDMENTS TO THE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES ACT.
