Well most people dont plan on getting addicted, Though some (Vieope) do. I think it has something to do with either being cool or stress. I started and still to this day have no idea why

It provides you with more free breaks at work than non-smokers.

It also functions as a replacement for conversation for people who are introverted or socially inept.

In women it fulfills an oral fixation that could be put to better use.

If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Nicotine improves your attention and your cognitive skills. In some extent produces relief of anxiety and slightly enhance memory. The key here is moderation.
Anythyng can get you addicted and harm your health, even a piece of chocolate cake.

If I eat a piece of chocolate cake, it doesn't make OTHER people fat. If I smoke a cigarette other people have to inhale what I exhale. Since there is a direct link between cigarettes and lung cancer this is not an optimal situation.

When you are eating that pizza or that chocolate cake you are probably influencing other people with a bad habit. That is how so many children acquire bad food habits and die because of it.

not the same, it would be the same had I said you are influencing bad behavior by smoking. It is not the same because you are DIRECTLY affecting my health without any change from me. I am not smoking, but I am getting the bad effects from it. If I eat a cake, you don't get punished for it unless you make the conscious decision to go get yourself a piece. YOU made that choice, not me.

When I see someone eating a cake or smoking, I am not inclined to do either one, this is a conscious choice of mine. If you and are in the same place tand you are smokinghe only conscious choice that can be made is for eith your or me to leave, which is not a fair choice and sometimes not a feasible one.

We are discussing two topics, the effect of other people habits and if a substance can be considered "bad".
You are right when you say that cigarettes affect directly one health but I think that it is impossible to figure out which is worst in long term, chocolate cake or smoking. Since every case of exposure and consequences to each habit will be different for everyone.

Saying that nicotine or smoking is bad is not right, the excess is the main problem here. Same thing happens with food, afterall obesity kills a lot in U.S.

Donīt forget that I am not doing apology to smoking.

Chocolate cake addiction can kill others indirectly, say an obese person is driving their car and they miss their exit to the bakery they may go to drastic measures to get back on track and cause a chain reaction that could kill or maim you. Whereas with smokers you can always put distance between yourself and them.

K then, back to the lesson at hand. You state that "Nicotine improves your attention and your cognitive skills. In some extent produces relief of anxiety and slightly enhance memory."

I suppose you have a source proving this information.

Ok, so this study gives support for you to walk around with a nicotine patch on, not to smoke. There are more things in a cigarette than just nicotine that will effect you differently. This study does not say SMOKING will lead to these increases, just nicotine. So get back on topic.

Smoke is still by far the fastest way to acquire nicotine.
I donīt think that smoking one cigarette once in a while can harm your healthy that bad. The problem about cigarettes is that because they are legal and it is inserted in our culture, people think that it is ok to smoke a lot of them per day. That is more than overdose. Have you ever heard about a person that smoke expensive cuban cigars ocasionally with a severe illness because of it ?
Give it up this discussion Dale.

Cigars are not inhaled, ciagrettes are.

Injection of nicotine would be superior, and have fewer consequences. ACtually, lacing a bullet with nicotine would be even quicker but I don't see that being recommended. Honestly though, what do you need nicotine for? I have no idea why people start, some it is psychological, others may do it from peer pressure. The only really irrational reason to start smoking is because you think it is vogue, which I believe is your reasoning.

I would be interested in seeing YOU start smoking once in a while and keep it at that, considering nicotine is addictive. I have a friend who never smoked until about 4 months ago. When he started he only did it when he drank. Right now he is currently chewing nicotine gum so that he can stop because he smokes so much.

I think the smoking addiction is imprinted at an early age...if you were never a smoker in high school/college, and then pick it up as an occasional thing, it's much easier for it to BE an ocassional thing. Addiction is a complex combination of many factors, but you rarely meet a long-term smoker that didn't start young.

    Just food for thought....

    ^Hahahahahahahahaha, so true.

On the other side, V, my Aunt smoked over 50 years and quit cold turkey. She has not smoked for like 5 years which is amazing to me because I remember her chain smoking like a whole pack during xmas when we had our xmas party. She quit cold turkey without any help, no patch or anything. She also went from a rail thin 125 lbs to 160 in the course of a couple months too, though.

Injection of nicotine is superior but I was thinking about a portable and social tool. I donīt want to walk around with a syringe.
I need to see somebody smoking a cigar, I canīt understand how and why they donīt inhale. I guess that nicotine still go to the bloodstream through the mouth and nose mocus membranes. That can lead to addiction.
