CLA Question

I have been taking CLA for a while not and always tried to get "Tonalin" CLA. However, this seems to be harder to do now, not sure why.

Is Tonalin CLA that much better than other CLA?

Tonalin was the first to come up with the proper isomers for CLA, so they pretty much set the standard.

The clinicals on CLA are mixed for weight loss and building lean body mass. The studies below are taken from Healthnotes:-

Compared with placebo, CLA significantly reduced percent body fat, but did not significantly reduce body weight.5 In a double-blind study of obese men, supplementation with 4.2 grams of CLA per day for four weeks produced a small but statistically significant reduction in waist size. However, compared with the placebo, CLA did not promote weight loss.6 At present, there is not sufficient evidence to support the use of CLA as a treatment for obesity.

Animal research suggests an effect of CLA supplementation on reducing body fat.7 8 Limited controlled human research found 5.6–7.2 grams per day of CLA produced nonsignificant gains in muscle size and strength in experienced9 and inexperienced10 weight-training men.
I'd spend your hard earned money on other supplements

For what it's worth... men's health recently quoted some broad study of various supplements like CLA. They say that only ALA and pyruvate were shown to help lose fat.

Pyruvate no CLA yes.

Pyruvate supplementation does not improve body composition in athletes.
The American College of Sports Medicine’s 49th Annual convention was held in St Louis, Missouri. This convention was run in conjunction with the 6th International Olympic Committee World Congress on Sport Science, making this one of the most significant gatherings in recent sports science history.

According to Dr. Turner from the University of North Carolina, most consumers don’t realize that the form of pyruvate shown in some research studies to produce weight loss is not the same pyruvate that is marketed as a weight loss supplement. Marketers of calcium pyruvate (the only form of pyruvate avalible as a supplement) incorrectly quote research on a pyruvate/dihydroxyacetone combination that showed some fat loss benefits using mega-doses. Calcium pyruvate has very little research that substantiates marketing claims of weight or fat loss.

Dr. Turner presented research performed by his colleagues that examined calcium pyruvate’s effects on metabolic rate and fat loss. Twelve highly trained athletes (nine females and three males) took 5 grams of calcium pyruvate a day or a placebo for three weeks. The athletes’ resting metabolic rate, body composition and strength were assessed before and after the supplementation period.

Results showed that three weeks of supplementation with the marketers’ recommended dose of calcium pyruvate produced no improvements in metabolism, body composition or muscular strength. Three weeks is not a long trial period, however, Dr. Turner seemed convinced from a review of the literature on body fat loss, that this time frame was ample to witness some kind of benefit in athletes. However, no benefits were witnessed from calcium pyruvate supplementation.

CLA. Scandinavian Clinical Research Centre, Norway.

A new long-term study by Norwegian scientists has confirmed that CLA is a potent supplement for burning fat and building muscle.

In a year-long study, the researchers from the Scandinavian Clinical Research Centre, Norway, found that the subjects who added CLA to their daily diet reduced their body fat by an impressive 9.6%. At the same time, their lean mass increased by 1.9%! The dosage used was 3-5 grams per day.

The evidence for CLA’s powerful effects on improving body composition just keeps getting stronger. Almost 12 studies in the last 3 years have revealed that CLA helps to burn unwanted fat while adding lean tissue. Best of all, no unwanted side effects are reported from taking CLA.

I love how Turner admits a 3 week study is inadequate then dismisses pyruvate.

From men's health 5/2004:

"According to a recent study review only two weight-loss supplements show promise as fat burners. The first is CLA which was found to reduce body fat by 2.8 to 3.8 percent. "It's believed to work by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down fat for absorption," says Thomas Lenz, Pharm. D, a coathor of the study. The second is pyruvate, an enzyme that helps manipulate fat metabolism. It helped cut body fat by up to 12% when combined with exercise. But as impressive as those results are, don't overdo it, Lenz cautions. More is not better when it comes to doage. "You should take the same dosage for the same amount of time that was tested," he says. For CLA that means 3g daily for 12 weeks and for pyruvate, 6g daily for 6 weeks"

CLA is not a "fat burner" it inhibits lipoprotein lipase (LPL)...
