Well, you should be consuming protein 5-6 times per day.

I have a whey protein shake in the morning because my breakfast (cereal) lacks quality protein. I do not have one after my work-out, because I have a protein bar.

So, I guess anytime you feel that your "meals" need extra protein would be my rule of thumb.

Do not take whey on an empty stomach at any time EXCEPT for right after training. Whey is absorbed too quickly, and is not a good protein for general use. Either take whey with meals to boost protein content or after your workout. At other times, if you are going to use a powder, use a protein blend: casein, albumin, whey, and/or soy.

I take my protein throughout the day in small doses. I take larger doses shortly after workouts, before I go to bed and when I get up in the morning. In the morning I add couple of scoopfuls of "just whey" from sportpharma to my meal replacement. I also get a lot of my protein from beans, tuna, chicken and protein bars.
