Well, you should be consuming protein 5-6 times per day.
I have a whey protein shake in the morning because my breakfast (cereal) lacks quality protein. I do not have one after my work-out, because I have a protein bar. So, I guess anytime you feel that your "meals" need extra protein would be my rule of thumb. BOARD SPONSORS: ![]()

Do not take whey on an empty stomach at any time EXCEPT for right after training. Whey is absorbed too quickly, and is not a good protein for general use. Either take whey with meals to boost protein content or after your workout. At other times, if you are going to use a powder, use a protein blend: casein, albumin, whey, and/or soy.

I take my protein throughout the day in small doses. I take larger doses shortly after workouts, before I go to bed and when I get up in the morning. In the morning I add couple of scoopfuls of "just whey" from sportpharma to my meal replacement. I also get a lot of my protein from beans, tuna, chicken and protein bars.
