I don't know what culture you come from but in almost any culture in the world you treat strangers or people you just meet with courtesy and at least a small amount of respect.

I don't know what kind of upbringing you had but politeness is considered important everywhere. I shudder to think of what kind of job you have or think you can get if you think that people don't deserve politeness upon first meeting them.

It is overprescribed but is an incredibly useful tool if you are ADD.

I am an adult with ADD and I can tell you that the difference between when I take medication (Ritalin is all I need) and when I don't is enormous.
