The most recent development in legal hormonal supplements has been an influx of various 17 alpha-alkylated (or methylated) prohormones and "designer steroids." These compounds are quite potent, and should not be used by those with limited prohormone experience. The methylation allows them to resist metabolism in the liver, making them highly orally bioavailable. It also makes them somewhat toxic to the liver, so these compounds need to be used with caution. Getting your liver values checked is advised, especially if using for more than two continuous weeks or taking more than two methylated steroids at the same time (both of which are not recommended to begin with). Taking liver protection supplements is a good idea when using these compounds. It is also a very bad idea to drink alcohol or take other drugs that are hard on the liver.
Methyls should be used for cycles of 1-2 weeks. For those that prefer longer cycles, one strategy is to run a long cycle of one substance and at the same time use a methyl in a one week on, one week off or two on, two off fashion.
A common misperception concerning methylated prohormones is that they are "orally bioavailable" or "stronger" versions of the original prohormone. However, methylation yields an entirely different steroid, and the effects can be very different. For example, one cannot expect the effect of methyl-1,4-andro to parallel that of 1,4-andro. Each compound must be evaluated independently. These are some of the new methylated steroids on the market.
Methyl-1-testosterone: Methyl-1-testosterone (M1T) has quickly gained popularity, and with good reason. It is inexpensive and highly anabolic. In comparison to the anabolic potency, the androgenic side effects are relatively low. Reactions to M1T vary, as many report very uncomfortable side effects while others report very few. Common side effects include lethargy, increased blood pressure, and joint pain. Decreased appetite also appears to be common. Many of the side effects may be due to decreased testosterone and estrogen levels, so 4-AD is a good compound to stack this with. Recommended dosage is 5-10 mg daily, or 10-20 mg daily for highly experienced users.
Methyl-1,4-androstadienediol: This compound is a prohormone to methandrostenolone, also known as Dianabol. Dianabol is one of the most popular steroids used by bodybuilders and has the reputation of causing rapid increases in strength and size. The chance of androgenic effects is low, but estrogenic effects are likely so it is important to keep an anti-estrogen on hand when using this substance. The most common side effect to be expected from this substance is bloating. User feedback is presently limited, but 20-30 mg is a good starting dose, and more experienced users may want to go with 30-50 mg.
Methyldienolone: This is a potent steroid structurally related to methyltrienolone, the methylated version of trenbolone. It is highly anabolic, moderately androgenic, and unlikely to produce estrogenic effects. This compound was just recently introduced, so user feedback is limited, but very promising. The few who have tried it report it to be very effective at improving body composition with little to no side effects. However, it is likely that this compound is very toxic to the liver, so all of the proper precautions must be taken. Recommended dosage is 1-3 mg daily or 4-5 mg for highly experienced users.
Methyl-5-alpha-androstenediol: This is a prohormone to methyl-dihydrotestosterone (methyl-DHT). It is similar in effect to DHT and its precursors – highly androgenic and anti-estrogenic, but unlikiely to have strong anabolic properties. This compound is primarily used as a preworkout stimulant, and users report very significant increases in strength on M5AA. As is the case with DHT, reports of increased muscle hardness are also common. Users of M5AA should expect a high likelihood of androgenic side effects such as increased chance of hair loss. Dosage is 5-15 mg, or 20-30 mg for highly experienced users.
Methyl-4-androstenediol: A putative prohormone to methyl-testosterone, which is generally seen as an undesirable substance, although there is some positive feedback with this prohormone specifically. Methyl-testosterone converts to methyl-estradiol and methyl-DHT, which respectively lead to a high chance of both estrogenic and androgenic side effects. Dosage is 150-300 mg daily.
