Whey, no doubt. Soy leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
With hot water whey desolves completly, and tastes like
hot chocolate. Here in Wisc. hot chocolate rules!

Just curious to how/why it can cause estrogen levels to rise.

Prince, give me a few days and I'll get you the science on this. However, a little soy in your diet is NOT going to hurt you...just don't make it a primary source. I believe whey is superior to soy for bodybuilding, but the best thing to do is get a variety of protein sources in each day. Also, remember that whey is best used after a workout, but not great on its own at other times of the day...at these times, blends are superior!Originally posted by Prince

I'm as ignorant as most on this subject, but I found this comment on another board a few days back.
This is cut and paste. (Stolen fm " ntrlmuscle" over on bodybuilding.com forum.)
"Yes soy is a complete protein. it is rather low in the amino acid methionine. Awhile back, they thought soy lacked this amino altogether, but recent research proves this isnt so.
The last question is one of the most debated questions, in regards to protein. Unfortunately, it is the supplement companies that are misleading consumers. Studies show that whole soy products can lead to excess free estrogen in males. However, soy isolate does not cause this to happen. The isoflavones in soy isolate act as weak estrogens in the body and prevent the stronger estrogen hormones from binding at the same receptor site. This leads to actually a lower estrogen level. In addition, soy isolate has been clinically shown to improve thyroid function(this is good....less fat, retain more muscle). In addition, soy is touted for its cholesterol lowering capabilities(but there are some new findings showing whey is every bit as good at this as well.......stay tuned.) In fact, most of the pioneers in bodybuilding(Reeves, Pearl) relied on soy. In conclusion, I feel soy isolate is a beneficial protein but I would recommend it be only part of your daily intake. Oh, and by the way, like casein, soy is a slow releasing protein."
Take it for what it's worth. Sounds like you can use it as a supp to your regular supps.

Different studies provide conflicting results. Yes, soy does enhance thyroid function and can help to lower cholesterol. Soy isolates have methionine added in, making them complete protein. Soy is a good protein, but all proteins have properties that make them unique. This means that a variety is your best bet. A little soy is fine. Its just that most bodybuilders don't want to take ANY chances with their test and estrogen levels, so they avoid soy on the small chance it can negatively affect their gains.

I think it's the isoflavone's in soy that cause slight estrogen increases. I also think that the amount of hormonal changes it causes are very small, not enough to really be concerned with.
