Getting Started (Has a shop given me too many supps?)
Hi guys I have recently started reading this board and think it's great. I am due to start at the gym next weekend and I have not been involved in bodybuilding before and am 32 and quite overweight. I am really keen to lose the weight but also gain muscle as fast as possible.
I went along to a supplement shop today and the guy was very friendly but I am still in need of info before I start the supps and gym. I would value your input on the following:
i) Are there any side effects with what he has proposed?
ii) Can they all be taken in the same cycle?
iii) Should I be taking these when I start or should I be waiting?
iv) Are there any products you would suggest?
v) My weight is mainly round my stomach but it also on my chest and I am not sure if it is gyno, however what is the best way for me to lose weight but also gain muscle?
He gave me:
1)MRM Meta-burn (with ephadrine) and said to start taking it now
2)Maximuscle Tribulus and Pump-up which he said to start taking about 2 weeks into training
3) Title Fitness Gaba which he said I should take when start with point 2.
4) Protein Megatein which I should take when start training.
I know lots of people have asked the same type of things when starting out but I would really value some input as I am excited and a little nervous.

Gilley
Gilley,
Congrats on taking the first step to getting in shape! Remember that patience, hard work and (mostly) sound nutrition is the key.
As for your supplement guy, I think he'd have proven himself to be a bit more reputable if he'd just offered the protein. I won't get into the pros/cons of the others but at this stage, you don't need them.
Oh...and any supp retailer who is selling you any items with ephedra should be suspect as it's been banned due to the FDA since April. Either he's selling you something he should't or he b/s'ed you about the ingredients.
Remember, get the basics down with your training, learn as much as you can about nutrition and specifically the type of diet you need to gain lean mass and burn fat.
Good luck!

The bloke said he knew it was being banned but that it was the most effective method of losing the weight. Would you recommend any fat burners so early on as the chap in the store said I should use the fat I have and not lose the weight and then gain the muscle.
I would also say that I am looking for something which would help with stamina/strength do you have any recommendations?
In terms of the other items he sold me would you be recommending that I leave using them until sometime next year?
Any tips on diet and how much protein I should be taking?

Keep the protein, take the rest back and demand a full refund. If he doesn't give it to you, tell him you are going to report him to the FDA or your local congressman ( who probably voted for the ban and love the publicity of busting a this type of law breaker) for selling a banned substance. This store is also one I would stay away from in the future,1, for bad sales ethics ( I would never trust anything they have to say after seeing this first experience), and 2, for selling illegal supplements.
A fat burner, a legal one, of course, you can work in after at least a couple of months of training and getting other things like your diet in order. Despite what the ads on TV and magazines say, supplements are just that, supplements. They are not "magic potions". You have to have diet and training down right first, otherwise, they will not work and you will just be wasting your money.
For protein, a good starting point is 1 gram per pound of bodyweight. If you looking to lose alot of weight, then use the target weight you are shooting for as your guide.

All good points. I guess as a supp retailer I'm reluctant to agree with "turning someone in" but I do have to agree that his sales tactics and customer service are pathetic - at best.
But you said exactly what I tell everyone, "supplements are just that".

Well I'm not sure where you live but if in the US, then this guy of course knew it was being banned because they've been banned for months.
I don't know what the hell his other comment even means " the chap in the store said I should use the fat I have and not lose the weight and then gain the muscle"
??????
Listen, fat is fat and muscle is muscle and neither of them "converts" into the other.
Get your diet down, try to eat 500 cals less than what your bmr (basal metabolic rate) requires. Do some research on bmr. Keep the protein high (1 gram/lb of bodyweight) and the carbs low to moderate. I'd prefer to see low carb. Don't worry about the fat as you'll get it with the protein. Stay away from dairy products, cheeses etc. Go for chicken breast, turkey (lean), egg whites, etc. Oh...and tuna, tuna, tuna. Try not to eat carbs late in the day and avoid sugars, simple carbs, white breat etc.
Just do the cardio (45 minutes/day min for 5 days week/min), hit the weights sticking to basic, compound exercises, i.e. bench, squat, d/l's, rows etc.
As for the supps. Hang on to them you might want them later but if you need something for extra stamina/energy, you need to rework your diet and rest. I am tired of people using supplements to get jacked for the gym. That's why ephedra became banned because of it's abuse.

I hate to start a p___sing match, but I can't let that statement go. How can you claim that is was banned because of so called "abuse"?
It was banned because 1) the large pharmaceutical companies were threatened by the effectiveness of ephedra which was draining sales from their much more expensive prescription drugs and thus lobbied it out of existence, and 2) grandstanding by politicians and a totally false campaign orchestrated by the major media to create the impression that ephedra was responsible for "thousands of deaths" when in fact the number was less than a hundred ( the chances of taking this and dying were actually akin to the chances of getting on an airplane and dying and no one is banning air travel) and there was no proven direct correlation between many of the deaths and ephedra, including in the celebrated case of the baseball pitcher.
And if was banned for "abuse", why are we not banning aspirin, sleeping pills, tobacco and a myriad of other things that small and in some cases large numbers of the population "abuse" and die from.

What I'm talking about is 15 year old kids who call us DAILY asking what they can take to "jack me up" for the gym now that ephedra is banned. Do you remember stuff like Ultimate Orange? THeir entire marketing concept was bsed on drinking it to get "jacked" and that IMO was what got the whole ball rolling with ephedra as a stimulant, not as a fat burner.
Sure, I agree with everything you said but if you don't think ephedra was abused by people who don't know shit about solid training, you're wrong. Listen, you're preaching to the choir here. No need to convince me of all people that the ban on ephedra was due to, as you said, "grandstanding" by hack politicians and a false media frenzy . But believe me, epehdra was abused for years and there is a direct correlation between that and the ban. The argument about cigarettes is valid but the money the tobacco industry spends on lobbyists and soft money in a month could swallow the supp industry whole, puke it up, swallow it again, shit it out and flush it. Nuff said.
The only thing I'd disagree on is this conspiracy theory about the pharmeceutical companies having somethig to do with it. That is urban legend shit that has been perpetuated on the internet. I'd like to see one shred of evidence about that.
