    good multivitamin

I'm looking for a good inexpensive multivitamin. Whether I have to order it online or go to a store to get it doesn't really matter (just as long as GNC isn't the only store to sell, they are WAY over priced). I looked at fish oil caps there today .... 100 for 20 bucks, i can go to Sam's club and get 300 for 7 bucks!! But yeah ... multivitamins please, i need one.

I've been using Kirkland Multi-vitamins and minerals for a couple of years. 500 pills in a jug. Decent price.

I wouldn't buy one, single thing, at GNC.

Go to Sam's Club and get the Member's Mark Advanced Multi. It is the same as Centrum's sports vitamin. Good profile, IMO. GNC's Mega-Women, or whatever they call it now, will just cost you a lot more. There are only a handful of manufacturers of raw vitamins in the U.S., and they are all the same quality (U.S. Pharmacopeia USP). What matters is how much of each ingredient is provided. Extra Calcium and vitamin E will serve you well, too. Both are dirt cheap at Sam's. Get the d-Alpha (natural) vit E, not the (synthetic) di-Alpha.

To add to your comment about USP although the raw ingredients are often very generic the USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program offers 5 comprehensive tests of vitamins and supplements. The manufacturers who particate in the program are listed here.

Do you have a link to a complete list of manufacturers that are USP certified? That list only has a few.

That is pretty much the whole list for now. Gaining certification is a lengthy and costly process so take up has been fairly slow. It's definitely the most rigorous certification program for supplements that I know of.

    But it says,
Selected brands and products are listed here, based on the preferences of our program participants.
Only 9 companies are listed there, but many more meet USP standards. I think I am missing the obvious again.

This mini Q & A explains the difference between USP and the Dietary Supplement Verification Program mark (DSVP):-

The DSVP program is run by the United States Pharmacopoeia, or, USP. While any product manufacturer can places the USP symbol on their product if they determine that their products meet USP standards, only products which have been verified directly and independently by USP can place the DSVP seal on their vitamins and supplements. DSVP is the ultimate symbol that the product you are consuming has been verified through each step of its manufacturing and into the bottle you`ve purchased. The USP Manufacturing Practices are patterned after those the FDA uses for verification of pharmaceutical products.

Q: I`ve seen the letters `USP` on supplement bottles before, what`s thedifference between a product with the letters `USP` and one that has the `DSVP` mark?

A: The letters `USP` on the label were placed there by the manufacturer to indicate that the product or ingredient meets USP standards. This is a good first step, but USP letters alone do not mean that USP has conducted any independent testing to verify the accuracy of the manufacturer’s claim.

A `DSVP` mark or symbol on a supplement’s front label indicates that USP has indeed conducted independent testing on the product itself and on the manufacturing process. Some of the tests we perform include an on-site manufacturing facility inspection, verification that the product was made in accordance with the USP standards and that it contains the ingredients listed on the label, among other rigorous requirements.

Q: Why does a DSVP mark matter?

A: The mark helps assure consumers that certain standards were met in the development of the product. These standards include good manufacturing practices, testing for pesticides and contaminants, and product dissolution and disintegration. If a product dissolves or disintegrates too rapidly or too slowly, it may interfere with the body’s absorption of the product.

Q: What does the mark signify?

A: The DSVP mark confirms that USP has tested and verified ingredients, product and manufacturing process of the dietary supplement.

Q: What makes USP an authority?

A: USP has been setting U.S. standards for drug products since 1820. We set standards not only for prescription medicines such as penicillin, but also for dietary supplements and over-the-counter products like aspirin tablets and sunscreen, for example.

Awesome info, redspy. Much thanks. I'm planning on righting a comprehensive essay on choosing multi-vitamins this summer. I've got much more research to do, even though I've studied it in school to some degree. I've got to get my hands on some of the great references I had before.

What is the opposite of a multi-vitamin without iron? An iron supplement with no vitamins?

Not ALL multivits are the same. Most designed for athletes/lifters have higher amounts of alot of stuff.

    Like I said, I recommend AST Multi-Pro 32X. It's like 15ish bucks for 100 of them.

Not saying you have to use AST... just saying that is what I recommend, and using that or any multivitamin for athletes IS often different than random crap you just go buy at walmart just to say you are taking a multivitamin.
