    Healthy Oils

I wasn't sure if this should be here or in nutrition.

I always forget which oils have what. I just got an organic oil blend.....ingredients: flax, sunflower/safflower, pumpkin, borage & sesame.

    Fat: poly 9.9 g (linoleic acid 4.9g), mono 2.7, sat 1.4 g

So, is this a complete oil w/ both the omega 3's & the 6's...and if not, which one is missing and which oil can I get it from?

I don't know which one you got there.

I use Spectrum organic flax oil.

    Sat fat 1g
    Poly 11g
    Mono 2g

    Omega 3, 8g 51~57%
    Omega 6, 3g 14~18%
    Omega 9, 2g 16%
    in 1 tbs. 130 cal.

w8, this always confuses the crap out of me, too. I was thinking I was good to go with just the flax (omega 3 and 6, right?) and then I read something that suggested that fish oil capsule supplementation was even a better idea (along with the flax) because the fish oil provides the EPA and DHA in a format immediately available to the body. Whereas, the linoleic acid in the flax oil must be converted by the body to EPA and DHA. All well and good, but the conversion rate is very low. Thus, the benefit of taking fish oil pills. Did that make any sense?

Flax oil contains both omega 3 and 6. Safflower oil is high on polyunsaturates.

You may consider supplementing with shark liver oil too.

A simple test to determine the quality of an oil; place a clear container of oil in the fridge for at least ten minutes and then check it for cloudiness. The less cloudy the better. If you try this experiment with most cooking oils you will find them to cloud over. That is a form of precipitate. Picture that taking place in your body and you may begin to think twice about injesting these poor grade cooking oils.

Flax is about 54-57% N-3, and about 21% N-6, safflower is almost the opposite, so together a good blend! However if you have other oils, nuts, seeds, avos etc in your diet, you are N-6 heavy, and flax would be more appropriate for balance! Historically humans need 3-4 to 1, N-6 to N-3!

Yes you will...the pills are simply less cost effective, and in my opinion, more annoying to take!
