How should you be to take ZMA and is it worth buying?

Are you asking how old? I assume so, but you forgot to type the word "old".

ZMA is basically just two minerals (zinc & magnesium-aspartate) and vitamin B-6, so there really is not a age limitation.

I use it and think it's a worthwhile supplement, however it's not the most important one.

ZMA when taken on an empty stomach about 60 minutes before bed is a fairly effective supplement for recovery purposes. I believe that it is superior to melatonin for this purpose.

If you take the ZMA to late at night it can make you a little groggy in the morning. When I take it @ a decent time feel fine the next morning. Maybe it's just me.
I had the same reaction when taking Universals ANIMAL STACK before training. It seemed to make me lethargic during my workouts.

Not only do I like ZMA for the sleep assistance, but I find that I have really strange dreams when I take it (and ordinarily, I'm not someone who remebers dreams). It's good stuff!

C'mon TCD...that is not called for. I totally agree with you about it being effective at raising Test levels ONLY if you have a deficiency, however, it does help many to sleep more soundly and peacefully. This = more anabolism, less catabolism = more growth.

I agree that the ads for ZMA, like many other supps, are over hyped for sure. However, I do believe in its ability to provide a more restful sleep for some. I will see if I can dig up something other than antecdotal proof.

I had tried ZMA a couple years ago but I am unsure if it had done anything for me. (I am pretty skeptical about most supplements). So I was just looking through some old threads to see what others though about it. This thread caught my eye. I did a search and found this article which includes a study on ZMA done on NCAA football players (complete with references). Maybe some of you guys will find this interesting:

if you're not deficient in these minerals it willl not do much, however it is worthwhile for promoting sleep.

Just saw this thread and want to state that I am in complete agreement with Ron on this point, based on the evidence I have seen. It is only help when you are deficient, which might include post Ph-cycle recovery (when endogenous T levels are supressed). But zinc alone would prolly be fine then.

As to helping one sleep, that MAY be anecdotally true, but I have read this is bunk, and have not seen anything that proves that it aids sleep. Obviously GP couldn't find anything. So it could be that some are experiencing a placebo effect, OR that it aids sleep in those deficent. Or it could be that they are taking on an empty stomach, and that is aiding sleep.

P.S. That deadpan line from Rohb re aiding sleep, is one of the funniest things I have ever read. I laughed out loud, literally.

The only reason I pulled this thread back up was because I tried the stuff a cuple of years ago and I did think it did anything for me (however I do remeber sleeping better for what that is worth) so Iwanted to se what everyone thought. I was thinking about giving it a shot again in hopes to notice something that I didn't before. Same goes for glutamine. I did think it was doing anything for me a couple of years ago anything but I was thinking about giving it a go again just to see if I notice anyhting different. What do you guys think?

I am pretty skeptical about supplements and the only one I have seen great benefits from has been creatine.
