    New potein shake

I just tried a new protein shake from GNC (I know, overpriced crap), it was called 50 Gram Slam or something like that. I had the milk chocolate and it was warm and still not bad...I actually finished the shake. It was costly but very easy to transport and for 50grams of protein that is not bad. Anyway, just thought I would share my finds (buy 3 get 1 free).

P.S. if you do buy one...SHAKE IT GENTLY...I was SOO excited about my lift (4 super sets and a combination in 30 mins) that I shook the can vigorously and it exploded everywhere ...Hey, I was excited....and lonely....I mean...uh....um....I love cheese!

fashong, if you liked the shake, I just bought this stuff called Mega extreme whey from GNC. It has like 60grams of protein and basically tastes the same

60 grams. that sounds like it could be to much.
You know its not good to overdo it with the protein.

unless you have about 220 lbs of LBM or more you don't need 60 grams of protein in one meal.

Your body needs 1 gram of protein per pound to maintain muscle, it need 2 grams per pound to gain. whatever your body does not use you will just poop out anyway. Besides, I just bought the stuff to see if it works, if it doesn't I wont buy it again...cant knock something you didn't try (unless it is unsafe and not economically feasible)

Your statement is open to debate.
I've spoken to some doctors that believe that your body does not just get rid of the unused protein. I myself am not a doctor so I can't go into the details. Just that the unused protein may cause some harm to your body in the long run. This is one reason why I cut my protein intake down compared to what I was doing in the past. Rather play it safe than sorry I guess. Although this doctors belief may be innacurate as well....who knows.

2 scoops of ON 100% make <> 50g and it mix well with only 8oz of milk, add 1/2 cup of oats and you have a hell of a breakfast! (cinamon oats makes it great tasting) and is very cheap too!

I don't see how protein would hurt you, I know too much of a good thing is toxic (ei too much water is toxic and can make you high). I mean how do you know how much too much protein is? And as far as negative effects, like what? Did you experience anything negative? Constipation? ED? Liver problems? You could be right, but it is my belief that if you consume too much of something your body removes it like alcohol and vomiting. Your body does the same thing with multivitamins. Multivitamins contain more than your body needs (ei 2500% vitamin b) so your body removes what you don't use and thats why your urine is yellow no matter how much water you drink.

Harvard School of Public Health - "Avoid too much protein. Getting too much protein can leach calcium from your bones. As your body digests protein, it releases acids into the bloodstream, which the body neutralizes by drawing calcium from the bones. Animal protein seems to cause more of this calcium leaching than vegetable protein does"

Just how important protein is as a risk factor for osteoporosis is still up in the air.

Thanks that was helpful....funny thing, I ended up taking that 60gram whey protein back anyway because it was vanilla (I hate vanilla, and the smell made me want to throw up in my mouth) and after taking it like 3 times my stupid self noticed it was half gone and then (did not do this before I bought it because I was SO excited about drinking only one shake a day and the 60grams) I looked on the back and it only has 18 serving because you need 3 scoops. I ended up buying some nitro-tech for the same price with 78 servings. Thanks for the AWESOME discussion!!!

Found more information about the too much protein causing osteoporosis. I guess whether you eat too much or not enough it can affect your bones. Too much meat eat protein is hard on your system because of the density.
    http://www.drmirkin.com/joints/8870.html
Of course all of this depends on the individual, and this study was done on women and they are more prone to osteoporosis, so if anyone can find a medical journal on the effects of too much protein in males to share with IM, it would be highly appreciated.

Yeah the doc I spoke to highly believes that, but I haven't seen enough evidence to prove that a bodybuilder should worry about it. But I trimmed down my protein amount just a bit anyway. I used to take 40-50 grams at one sitting then 3 hours later take another. Now instead I take like 20 grams every 1.5 hours. This is just a bit less and might give the body a chance to better consume the protein before taking more. Hell....who knows . All I know is I am growing, so something is working.

I have heard of ranges from .75-1g to maintain and 1-whatever for bulking. If you take in too much protein your body will store it as fat.

So you think if you eat 5000 calories from protein and you burn say 2500 calories in a day you are going to just shit out what you don't use.

I'm an invalid source to answer that question.... I think those comments are best directed to one that studies diet and nutrician...

And isn't that a bit exaggerated "5000 calories from protein?"
My point was that from the average body builders protein intake, I have never heard that excess protein would turn to fat. But again, when it comes to nutrician and diet I am a bad source

    Hey Lam...what's your thought?

5000 was supposed to be an exageration. My point was that you can't take in as much protein as you want thinking any excess will just be crapped out. The body breaks down protein into useable energy sources and aminos I believe. Anything the body does not use will be converted to glucose and stored as fat.

Well your statement makes sense. This is why I have always made sure I didn't overdo it with my protein intake. This was my entire point to begin with. I stated that I believed one can take to much protein and cause negative results.
