Cholesterol reducing supplements? (i know about sesamin/fish oil)
My mother is going to be put on cholesterol reducing meds, and Im a bit worried. I was wondering if there were any other cholesterol reducing supps, other than sesamin and fish oil, which she purchased for herself, but wont take regularly, and at the dosage she knows she's supposed to... Now, after she scored a 269 , maybe she will start taking them. In any case, are there other products that can improve her lipid profiles?

and has been studied in smalll, well designed clinical trials. The link provides the dosages.
It may still work throught the liver so I am on the lookout for more word on that.
Fish oil has more data than flaxseed oil or sesame seed oil in reducing cholesterol but it mainly works on lowering the triglycerides. ( i have yet to see it work well on the LDL) The standard dose to lower triglycerides from 300 to recommended level of 150 or less has ranged from 3000mg to 6000mg a day from what I have seen.
Also, the red yeast extract has some data as cg mentioned

I'm assuming the MD prescribed the meds, correct? Okay, when you went to the pharmacy, did you specifically ask the pharmacist questions about the drugs? That is always a great idea, because a lot of MD's just prescribe the latest and newest drugs that a company rep sold them. Pharmacists know exactly how the drugs work in the body, and how they will react with other meds she may be taking. I'm not saying all MD's are this way, but many are. Regardless, it is always smart to ask the Pharmacists these types of questions. I just know some nursing majors here at the university I attend who have taken Pharmacology and they know the drugs and their effects, and what happens inside the body with them.

Do you guys have a family history of high cholestrol? Is she diabetic or overweight?
Genectics determines the number of LDL receptors we have in our bodies. You could have a totally healthy lifestyle, but if you have lots of LDL receptors in the body, then you will have a high cholestrol value. Of course diet plays a role, but genetics is also a great determining factor. You see, we have LDL binding sites outside the cell membrane. LDL binds to this site and goes through the membrane and endocytosis occurs. When endocytosis occurs, what happens is pieces of the membranes are pinched off and left inside. So the more LDL receptors, the more binding sites, and the more cholesterol being transported and left behind.

We have a family history of very high cholesterol, and many of us are overweight.
She is not an exception. I try to get her to eat right, and in general, she does. I.E. high fiber/protein, mostly good carbs, etc.
