    casein protein

I just got a package of some supplements. There was casein protein included. I put a couple scoops into my shaker and poured in some milk to mix and drink before I went to sleep. It was to my suprise that it was extremely thick. Is this normal?

One of my pre-bed meals looks like this:

    20g casein protein
    150g cottage cheese
    1.75 cups skim milk

Casein is generally much thicker than say a whey protein, especially if there is a milk protein isolate in there. Some manufacturers also add thickeners like guar gum to make the drink more satisfying.

In Nutritional Biochemistry, we separated the casein and whey from 2% Milk. Casein is the curd, the major protein in cow's milk. Casein contains 8 essential amino acids that the human body cannot synthesize. So our diet must provide these AA's. The curd is commonly sold as cottage cheese or is used to produce other kinds of cheese. Whey is the watery part of milk that also contains lactose and minerals. B-Lactoglobulin is the most important whey protein because it carries immunological properties that help protect infants until their own immune systems develop.
