My personal opinion is that CLA is pretty useless, but we will see what others say. I just do not see much of a benefit from it.

A 12 month study was recently done in humans showing weight loss on only 3g per day. Others on various boards seem to use a higher dose, like 6-10g.

I don't know about timing the dose, sorry.

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was done with "ordinary" people who exercise, and not with intense athletes. I was pretty surprised by it since CLA hasn't been that popular.

I don't think CLA is a waste of money, but I think you get more bang for your buck with fish oil.

Side note-- This guy Gregg Avedon recommends CLA. Although I think he once competed, he's not a huge bodybuilder. He does get ripped though, and you've probably seen him on fitness magazine covers.

He also knows about eating clean:

Phase 3: This is my pre-shoot diet. Here the big element to clean up is the carbs that I mentioned above. I'll have pasta or rice about once a week, and it's a smaller portion than I'll normally have. Usually not enough to satisfy me! It's about 60 grams worth of pasta or rice. I'll also watch any other higher carbs like oatmeal in the morning...basically cutting the portion down, and the biggest key in this 3rd phase is balance between carbs/proteins/fats. I stick to a very "Zone" based diet, and will usually do this 3 weeks to 6 weeks away from a shoot depending on how much notice they give me. Realistically it's about 3 weeks notice!

    ...

Let me give you some idea of what I do and don't eat when eating a very clean diet:

NOTE: Keep in mind that these are some of the guidelines I stick to when I'm eating within a "phase 3" diet plan, and a lot of the time when on my "phase 2" diet plan. For a brief overview of "phases 1, 2, and 3" diet plans, see below under the July 2005 Email Archives.

    I don't eat pizza

    I don't eat cheese

I don't use mayo or mayo substitute (i.e. fat free mayo)

I don't drink milk, skim milk, or fat free milk

I don't drink orange juice or ANY juices

I don't drink any sodas (even diet)

I don't eat any ice cream

I don't eat any sweets, cakes, cookies, crackers, chips, pretzels, etc...(empty carbs)

I don't have soup unless it's without sodium

I don't have nuts (when on a very strict diet)

I do eat red meat about once every two months

I make sure that everything is very low sodium in anything I eat

I do have pasta about twice a week

I do have rice about once a week

I do eat lots of veggies

I do eat lots of fruits

I do eat Friendship's No Salt Added Cottage Cheese 1%

I do drink herbal tea before bed: Traditional Medicinal's Weightless Cinnamon Spice

I do have 3 whey protein shakes mixed in water every day

I do have a greens drink once a day

I do eat 1 to 2 yogurts daily

I do have toast in the morning with whole fruit jelly and flax seeds

I do have oatmeal with a banana on the mornings that I don't have the toast

I will have a tuna sandwich (remember no mayo)

I do supplement with fish oil

I do use a teaspoon of olive oil a day (about...sometimes less)

I do eat the frozen no sugar added pops (4 in the evening)

I do have coffee in the morning, and sometimes in the late afternoon as well

So that's some of the things that I do when I'm eating clean. If you're already eating like that, then I say for you to continue. If you're doing some of the things and you want to tighten up your diet a little more, then I'd say to implement some of those things that you're not currently doing into your diet.
