ZMA with food

My bottle of zma says to take on an empty stomach and without any milk. I understand that milk interferes with the zma but I was confused as to why I should be taking it on an empty stomach. Reason I ask is I usually like to eat some protien and take a fish oil cap before I go to sleep and I am not sure if it will now interfere with the zma I am taking.
