It is a way to supplement your protien intake during the day. If you need to increase your protien and cannot seem to get there with solid food, then you can "supplement" with whey. Mix with water, milk, yogurt, etc.
As far as post workout, you are better off with non-fat milk/yogurt or some other fat free liquid. The fat will slow down the digestion process, and you want the nurishment in the PWO drink (meal) to digest fairly quickly. Then you follow it up with a solid meal about an hour later.
