30-50g of fish oil daily?

30-50g of fish oil daily?

Is this alright to do for a limited time only (2 months) then cutting to half? I read this on another forum, but wanted to know from my peers. Charles Poliquin suggested it.

11. Fish oils will improve your cardiovascular risk profile by lowering VLDL, triglycerides, homocysteine, fibrinogen, and increasing HDL levels. Combining fish oils with plant sterols will improve lipid levels even more than either alone.

12. Fish oils can also decrease blood pressure by several mechanisms. These include increases in the vasodilatory compound, nitric oxide, reducing vascular inflammation, blocking the constrictive elements in the vascular wall such as the calcium channels reducing blood viscosity, and inhibiting a blood vessel constrictor (thromboxane). Lipoprotein (a) is another CVD predictor that can be lowered by fish oils (a 19% reduction was seen with natural, stable fish oils and just 4% with a highly purified fish oil).

13. Fish oils are a great stress fighter. Supplementation with n-3 fatty acids inhibits the adrenal activation of steroids, aldosterone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine (catecholamines) elicited by a mental stress, apparently through effects exerted at the level of the central nervous system. Therefore, for the same amount of stress, one will produce fewer stress hormones if consuming fish oils on a regular basis."

Too much of anything is bad. You could try it but I don't think it's a good idea.

Not a good idea thins blood and screws with insulin sensitivity.



Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

That's a LOT of fish oil. For what you pay for the quality stuff...that would be incredibly expensive and you risk the problem Ian mentioned.

Do you people actually, seriously take 5- 6 capsules of fish oil\omega 3 per day???????

I take 10 of the Cosco brand a day. 3 grams of omega-3 a day

I was not asking why to take fish oil, I was asking why you would take 30-50grams per day.

Not a wise idea. To much and you are looking at tiredness, blood thinning, blood clotting issues, lethargy, upset stomach, decreased appetite, vomiting, joint soreness, irritability, headache, drying and cracking of the lips and skin, hair loss, and yellowing of the skin.

Exactly. There is such thing as too much of a good thing.

For instance.........one switches from simple carbs to complex carbs in hopes of losing weight. Well because one knows these complex carbs are much healthier they feel it gives them the right to eat as much as they want. So what happens........they gain weight. Too much of a good thing.

Same with fish oil. Many of the symptoms I listed above are cured with a smart intake of EFA's but once you go overboard, they come back.
