3-5g. is a good dose pre-workout if you are looking for the NO effects. If you have something like AAKG than 3g. would be fine. Side effects include increased free radicals, so it should be cycled. It can be taken by itself there is no need to mix it, but you can if you like. The purpose of L-Arginine in the supplement realm is to cause vasodilation (widen blood vessels/opposite of constriction) so you get a stronger "pump".
