    lying tricep press

I use a lying tricep press (aka French press) as my main tricep exercise. Similar to using the flat bench press as my main chest exercise. I always use a curl bar for the press. Anyone use a different exercise for the main part of their tricep workout? Anyone vary this exercise with dumbbells and/or barbell?

Sometimes at heavier weights, the french press puts a lot of strain on the elbows.

Alternative exercises include dips (you wouldn't want to do these if you have a bad RC), close grip bench press, floor press (I like this one).

Thanks for the reply. I use dips for burnouts. I'm going to try the close grip bench as an alternative. I thought the floor press was for chest?

Weighted dips sound like a good option. I'd have to buy the dip belt, but I could use it for pull-ups as well.

Lying on the ground inactivates the lower body and decreased your range of motion. In turn, the exercise is an effective horizontal upper body pushing exercise ('chest' exercise). Because you cannot create force the same way you would lying on a bench, your load would be decreased. As a result, this exercise wouldn't be your dominant upper/horizontal/push exercise, but the load would still be heavy enough to effectively work your triceps.

Thanks, always looking for worthwhile equipment that is affordable. Recently bought one of those pull-up bars you stick in your doorways, and I think it's fantastic. We'll have to see how good it really is when I get my dip belt-lol-
