Ok, picked it up for PC (consoles...pfffft) while I was home this last hitch. Here are my impressions:
Single player:
The single player campaign remains a must for FPS fans. The entire COD line of games has consistently been so far above the competetion in AI, smooth FPS while maintaining the highest levels of story and soundtrack. Absolutely worth every dime.
One caveat is that if you did not play COD4: MW, it is neccessary to pick this up and play through it if you want to have any sort of understanding of the storyline. On the upside, COD4: MW is arguably the best FPS shooter game in the modern style genre, costs 10 bucks at walmart, and is STILL the #1 most played online multiplayer FPS for the PC, so is very much worth it.
Multiplayer:
I will start this by saying that I am almost ridiculously good at these games. I don't know why, and I wish my talents were in more worthwhile areas, but apparently I was a combat ninja warrior in a past life and excel at FPS. About 30 seconds after logging into the multiplayer, I was dominating most everyone. With the upped bullet damage since the previous installment, this game is very unforgiving for players without good twitch skills. This is almost a permanent hardcore.
This is good and bad for a couple of reasons. It is good because the gaem remains fast paced and is over fairly quickly. But it is bad because it causes many of the subpar players to just camp out of frustration, which leads to a whole lot of players sitting around waiting on someone to run past them.
Lame.
The lack of dedicated servers is just plain stupid. I have no idea why they did this, but it explains why the PC crowd has not been won over, and the numbers of online players do not even come near the players on COD4. A game that is 4 years old.
Conclusion.
Great game. Worth every penny for the single player campaign alone, and the multiplayer has promise, but is probably not a good entry game for new FPS players.
