I happened to catch the New Zealand vs. Australia semi-final, and I was hooked. Holy cow is that a very entertaining game to watch. I went on to watch the final between New Zealand and France.

The biggest surprise were just how many very specific rules there are. There were also a lot of new terms to learn. None of that took away from how fun it was to watch.

For a bonus, since it was New Zealand, I got to watch the Maori Haka dance before the games.

I'm going to follow New Zealand next season.

What a great sport.

I believe Nee Zealand women are the loosest around too. I'm almost positive I read somewhere that they report the most sexual partners.

Rugby is a pretty intense sport. You should look for when New Zealand plays Samoa. Both sides will do their ritual war dances, pretty cool to see. One of my buddy's plays in France, and his whole team got brand new VW's. You got a coupe if you were single, and a sedan if you had a family. He's 6'3'' 260lb. Tongan and was pissed because he didn't know how to drive stick :roflmao: But he was very thankful, plus they flew his family up from Hawaii...

I'll track down the NZ vs. Samoa game. The dances should be awesome. Not to mention the actual game!

I checked to see what the NZ players got as a bonus. It was $100,000 NZD. Very nice.

I felt bad for Weepu. The last -- and most important -- game of the year, and he has his personal worst game. :(

what channel even shows rugby today? I got into a rugby kick many years ago when they used to show that stuff on ESPN2, that and cricket which is also a pretty wild sport.

My wife (an Aussie) is a HUGE fan of Rugby. She occasionally catches games on Spike TV.

Of course, she was (and still is) UBER critical of American Football. I have to say, comparing the two, she does make some good points.

I find them online. I had no plans to watch rugby, but ran across a game.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think it's the biggest sport in OZ and NZ.

I've read a lot rugby fans try to validate rugby by putting down (like they need to).

Most of what I've heard is pretty wrong.

My favorite is that Football is a "weaker man's sport" because they use pads. The average weight of a rugby forward is 200 pounds. The average weight of an football linebacker is 250 -- with 350 pound monsters.

The hits in rugby are far less brutal that the freight train hits than those football. Most rugby injuries are minor, whereas football injuries tend to be pretty severe. Just look at the number of deaths from each sport. It's not even close.

I like this guy's explanation:

Football and Rugby are 2 totally different sports. It's so hard to compare the two of them.

Rugby is all about possesion -- the longer you have the ball, the better chances you will get at a try.

Football is territorial - you don't let your opponent move a damn inch forward on the field.

And p.s. the tackles in rugby and football are different, hence football has pads.

The ideal rugby tackle is to wrap the man and drag him down, because you want to pin him down so he cannot pass to a teammate (play does not stop after a tackle).

The ideal football tackle is a hard head-on-chest collision that will knock the player to the ground, effectively scaring the player into not running the same play again.

Most of the tackles in American Football are disallowed and penalized in Rugby

Oh believe me... She and I have had these discussions. Her biggest criticism (if I could call it that) is how Football has an Offense, Defense, Special teams and so many multiple players to sub in.

Rugby, you play both Offense and Defense. No substitutions, once you're out, you're OUT!

It's a minor arguement between us but one she enjoys jabbing me with. I don't mind. I don't know 1/10th about Rugby that she does. She grew up with it her whole life. Of course, she has the same disadvantage with me when we watch football.

That's a good argument.

I say that Football uses specialists because every inch, every score, must be done by the person in the top 1% of the game. It's a game of maximum skill.

Whereas rugby is more about a bunch of generally skilled guys moving a ball up and down the pitch.

I just realized that marriage is like rugby: once you're substituted, you're out; and it's a grind.

Girlfriends are like football: you're allowed substitutions and definitely need "pads".

All this talk of rugby makes me want to check it out. I know that espn3 online (or whatever it's called now) shows pretty much every sport from around the world.

It really is fun to watch. Give a try and let me know what you think.

Rugby is the most hardcore sport that exist. I don't understand why American football is so popular, yet hardly anyone gives a shit about rugby. Take away a football player's pads, and then stop giving them a break every 6-8 seconds and you have rugby.

I played for 3 years and it is the hardest thing I have ever done. I played football for 13 years and the two don't even compare. Football is to rugby as baseball is the football.

played rugby in college, I remember my first game. Got laid out hard by a beastly irish guy, went deaf for a few minutes. While on the sideline trying to rest it out my teammate gets punted in the face, loses a tooth and is spitting blood everywhere. Ref tries to get him out of the game to go to the hospital, guy tells him "I got a game to play, the hospital isn't going anywhere" rips part of his undershirt off and stuffs it in his mouth. Bad ass people. I felt like such a little bitch for sitting down lol Later in the season I ended up ripping my ear in half. Years later and i just had a 3rd surgery to repair it lol. Awesome game if you're willing to grab your balls and tear shit up. But you better have good insurance!

My shoulder problems all stem from rugby. I finally quite when I decided that lifting took priority over rugby. It is impossible to do both.

The game not stopping every 30 seconds is nice. Less commercials too. And it doesn't ride so much on one guy, the quarterback. Definitely fun to watch sometimes!

Is this what you were talking about?

this is so true.

i played football and wrestled,

when i was in high school i went to england and played with kids who were on their schools A team. and holy shit, they were faster, hit harder, and just plane better all around. i only graduated a couple of years ago.

but the only way i could describe rugby is way harder then football but no where near wrestling.

its so much more hardcore too. just when i was there a kid broke his femur. and kids were constantly getting their ears ripped in the scrums. almost everyone had a little cauliflower,, like wrestling.

right after i left a hooker got his sack ripped open when they broke out of a scrum!! way worse then any football injury lol

haha yes! every game is balls out! youd be messed up for a week or two if you really went for it. busted mouth minimum lol i broke my nose several times.

my neck still hurts sometimes, from when i dump tackled a guy and drove my head into his stomach. that was over a year ago. lol

One time at like 3am on some Fox Sports channel, ESPN2 or some shit like that I came across Rugby game and LOVED IT! This was during the NFL off season when they were talking about the possibility of there not being a season this year. I was kinda glad because if the NFL did what the NBA did I'd have something fall back on to satisfy my primordial instincts

I had no Idea what was going on but it was great! I was trying to understand when they could kick it, what got what points, when to pass it back, start over in that massive huddle.

Those dudes are bunch of massive fucks!
