6000 airport screening staff axed
From correspondents in Washington
May 01, 2003
THE US government is to axe 6000 of the 56,000 passenger and baggage screeners at the country's airports to save money.
It will also abolish a requirement for police to staff all airport checkpoints.
"While we still live in a dangerous world, it also is time to assess our workplace requirements in relation to budget realities," Transport Security Administration chief James Loy said today.
Loy said the measures would "refine" aviation security.
They would also provide $US2.3 billion ($3.7 billion) to airlines to cover their share of security costs since the September 11, 2001 attacks, he said.
Only 13 months ago, Transport Secretary Norman Mineta launched a program to hire more than 30,000 new screeners to beef up security in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.
