Sperm donor sought for child support

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple so they could have a child said on Wednesday he is shocked the state is now trying to make him pay child support.
William Marotta, 46, donated sperm to Jennifer Schreiner and Angela Bauer under a written agreement that he would not be considered the father of the child nor liable for child support. A daughter, now 3, was born to Schreiner.
But in October, the state of Kansas filed a petition seeking to have Marotta declared the father of the child and financially responsible for her after the couple encountered money difficulties.
Marotta will ask the court in a hearing January 8 to dismiss the claim, which centers on a state law that the sperm must be donated through a licensed physician in order for the father to be free of any later financial obligations. Marotta gave a container of semen to the couple, who found him on Craigslist, instead of donating through a doctor or clinic.
The case is seen as having repercussions for other sperm donors. Sperm banks routinely provide sperm to people who want to conceive a child on the understanding that the donors are not responsible for the children.
Kansas is seeking child support from Marotta, including about $6,000 in medical expenses related to the child's birth, according to its petition.
"This was totally unexpected," Marotta said in a phone interview. "The very first thing that went through my mind was that no good deed goes unpunished."
The case has attracted national attention. Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said Wednesday "it is unfortunate and unfair" that Kansas is seeking money from a sperm donor.
"It certainly might have a negative effect on other men's willingness to help couples who need a donor, which would be harmful to everyone," Minter said.
"I also think it undermines everyone's respect for the law when you see it operate so arbitrarily."
Kansas officials are required under the law to determine the father of a child when someone seeks state benefits, said Angela de Rocha, spokeswoman for the Department for Children and Families. The couple was compelled to provide that information, which led to investigation of the sperm donation.
Marotta should be declared the father and subject to financial claims because he donated the sperm directly to the women and not through a physician, as required by Kansas law, the state's petition states.
Marotta said he's had virtually no contact with the child, but that he and Schreiner have remained cordial. He said she was pressured by the state to provide his name as the sperm donor.
"To me, ethics need to override rules," he said.
Lawyers for Marotta argue that he had no parental rights because of his agreement with the couple and cannot be held financially responsible.
They cite a 2007 case in which the Kansas Supreme Court ruled against a sperm donor seeking parental rights because he did not have any such agreement with the mother, lawyers for Marotta said.
"So now, we are flipping the argument around," Marotta attorney Ben Swinnen said Wednesday.
If the father had no legal parental rights in the 2007 case, Marotta should be declared to have no parental obligations in the current case, Swinnen said.
Marotta, a race car mechanic, responded to an ad on Craigslist from someone offering to pay $50 for sperm donations, but he made the donation for free. Marotta said he and his wife have no children of their own but have fostered a daughter. Marotta said he was simply trying to help a couple wanting a child.

How about the two cunts who went out of their way to conceive only to turn around and request government assistance. On top of it all they ratted the dude out to get that money. "They felt pressured?" Ha! Back stabbing worthless cunts in my opinion.

Meanwhile the flipside in California, the great grandson of Jackie Gleason:

Dueling ?Today? Interviews: Jason Patric, Ex-Girlfriend in Battle Over Son

Actor Jason Patric says the mother of his 3-year-old son is lying when she asserts that he voluntarily gave up his rights to have a relationship with the boy.

Patric leveled the lying accusation at the woman ? his former girlfriend, Danielle Schreiber ? when he appeared on NBC?s ?Today Show? on Tuesday morning, one day after Schreiber had her say on the subject Monday on ?Today.?

At the center of their battle is a little boy named Gus, who was conceived using sperm donated by Patric.

Schreiber says Patric told her in a letter that he had no desire to be the child?s father. But he insists he does want to be the boy?s father, and that she misinterpreted his letter.

She says he was uninvolved in the boy?s upbringing so far, though the boy evidently knows Patric well enough to call him Dada. Patric says he was involved in the boy?s life until about 21 weeks ago, when, he alleges, Schreiber began barring him from the boy?s life after the couple broke up.

This was the kind of tit-for-tat seen on ?Today? Monday and Tuesday morning as both Schreiber and then Patric appeared separately ? each with a lawyer in tow ? for interviews conducted by Savannah Guthrie, who?s in L.A. this week.

Is she lying?? Guthrie asked Patric after a news report on the case by NBC?s Mike Taibbi was shown Tuesday on ?Today? (and included in the clip, above).

?Unfortunately, she is, yes,? said Patric, 47. ?And the way the story is played out ? because it?s a nice soundbite about ?sperm donor? ? But I was never a ?sperm donor.? We had fertility issues,? he said. ?And therefore I had to give sperm ? I signed an ?intended parent? form with my name and Danielle?s name as ?intended parents? of the child that would come from this process.?

Patric asserts that his signature on that form proves his intention to be a parent to the boy. But the case has already landed in court, which ruled in favor of Schreiber, whose lawyer called Patric a liar when Schreiber and the attorney appeared Monday on ?Today.?

?A court has found that Jason is not a truthteller,? said the attorney, Patricia Glaser.

Despite the fact that the case has already been the subject of a court ruling, Patric and his attorney are still seeking ways for Patric to win at least partial custody of the boy. Part of their strategy seems to involve appearing on television to draw attention to the plight of Patric and other sperm-donor dads who seek greater involvement in the rearing of their off-spring. In fact, a new bill on the subject has begun to be discussed in the California legislature.

Patric first appeared last week on Katie Couric?s daytime talk show to talk about the case.

Liam Gallagher Sued for $3 Million by New York Times Journalist After Reported Love Child | Comcast

Liam Gallagher Sued for $3 Million by New York Times Journalist After Reported Love Child

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is being sued for $3 million by a journalist who claims that she gave birth to his daughter less than a year ago.

Liza Ghorbani, who has written for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, claims that she had an affair with the singer and would now like a DNA test to prove that the 40-year-old Brit is the father.

Ghorbani filed the papers in Manhattan Family Court and while the first case's hearing was last Friday, the full hearing was adjourned until later this month.

Gallagher has sued the New York Post in response to their original story .

Ghorbani published an interview with the singer in The New York Times in May of 2010.

In the revealing piece, titled What's an Ex-Frontman to Do?, she detailed the events that took place on evening when the two enjoyed a late night out on the town.

Gallagher and Ghorbani met at the Ritz Carlton hotel bar in Manhattan before heading to Norwood, a private club at the time.

The article, however, doesn't hint at any possible romance or even affair between the two. The piece mainly discusses his future career plans and his highly publicized rift with his brother Noel.

Gallagher is currently married to former All Saints singer Nicole Appleton. The two wed in 2008 and have a son together. He also has a son with Patsy Kensit, his first wife, whom he tied the knot with in 1997.

This isn't the first time that the notorious singer has seen his name in the headlines for allegedly having a love child.

In 1998, while he was still married to Kensit, it was reported that Lisa Moorish gave birth to Gallagher's first daughter.

A rep for Gallagher has not responded to E! News.

MTV Series Focuses on Lives of Sperm Donor Kids | XFINITY TV Blog by Comcast

MTV Series Focuses on Lives of Sperm Donor Kids

NEW YORK (AP) ? Breeanna Speicher?s curiosity about her background led her to a family she never knew she had and inspired a new MTV series that stretches the very concept of family.

The 18-year-old college student from Reno, Nev., is the daughter of two women who conceived her with a sperm donation. She?s the central figure in ?Generation Cryo,? which follows her effort to discover half siblings through a registry and, ultimately, track down the donor who gave her life. The first of six episodes debuts Monday at 10 p.m. EST.

The first recorded artificial insemination came in the 1800s to a woman who didn?t know she was getting it, said Wendy Kramer, founder and director of the Donor Sibling Registry. Doctors performed the procedure in the middle of the last century, but it was mostly kept quiet before the practice became much more widespread with the opening of sperm banks in the 1980s, she said.

That means enough ?donor babies? are coming of age now to prompt public interest in their experiences, evident in both ?Generation Cryo? and the new Vince Vaughn movie ?Delivery Man,? about a donor who discovers he?s responsible for more than 500 kids.

Kramer said she tried for eight years to get a television network interested in a story drawn from her registry of people trying to connect with other donor families before MTV showed interest.

?We know that our audience is interested in stories relating to family, and this is definitely a unique and fresh take that really makes you think about what a family is,? said Marshall Eisen, series executive producer.

Kramer admitted to some trepidation ? ?We didn?t want to make a reality show, ?Donor Kids Gone Bad,?? she said ? but is pleased with how it turned out.

Speicher?s nose ring and adeptness with video selfies make her a natural MTV personality and easily relatable for the audience. Eisen?s original interest was in half-siblings finding each other, but Speicher?s desire to find her donor adds a richness and level of complexity to the story.

In the first episode, she travels to suburban Atlanta to meet Jonah and Hilit Jacobson, twin 18-year-olds who had the same sperm donor. Besides getting to know them, her goal is to collect a DNA sample from Jonah that?s necessary to track the donor?s identity.

Jonah is happy to do it, but it prompts raw emotion and feelings of inadequacy in his father, captured by MTV?s cameras. The twins? father has gone along with them connecting with half-siblings through the registry; the possibility of them contacting the donor is another matter entirely. Later in the series, Speicher meets a half-sibling who is uncomfortable knowing he is a donor child, and another set of siblings who are conflicted about learning about their donor.

Some donors are interested in meeting the children they helped create, even if they donated anonymously, Kramer said. Others aren?t. The resolution of Speicher?s search isn?t resolved in the first episode and, Eisen said, filming of the series isn?t done.

?You think you know what to expect,? Speicher said. ?You think you can handle it. But until you get to that point, there?s no way to prepare.? Filming prompted ?a lot of different emotions ? some that I?m probably not even aware of,? she said.

The experience of finding half siblings is fascinating as they search for shared traits: Speicher and the Jacobsons note they have similarly large lower lips.

?They really connected, and it has a lot of meaning for them,? Eisen said. So far, Speicher has found 14 other people descended from the same donor. She doesn?t know how many are out there.

Speicher and her half siblings will soon have to deal with other emotions as the series makes them minor celebrities. Being the subject of a PBS documentary would be one thing for an 18-year-old, but being visible on MTV is something else entirely.

?I opened the door to be a public figure because I truly believe in what I?m doing,? she said.

Kansas sperm donor to appeal ruling that he must pay child support

KANSAS CITY, Kansas ? A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple so they could have a child plans to appeal a judge's ruling that he is the legal father of the girl and must pay child support, his lawyer said on Thursday.

William Marotta, 47, was financially responsible for the child because under state law sperm for artificial insemination must be donated through a physician, a judge ruled on Wednesday, siding with the state of Kansas.

The couple, Jennifer Schreiner and Angela Bauer, had found Marotta by advertising on Craigslist and did not use a physician in the donation process, according to court records. They signed a contract agreeing that Marotta would have no financial responsibility to the child.

When the couple encountered money difficulties and one sought state benefits, the state petitioned to have Marotta declared the child's father and financially responsible.

"A parent may not terminate parental rights by contract ... even when the parties have consented," Shawnee County District Court Judge Mary Mattivi ruled.

Marotta's lawyer, Ben Swinnen, said his client would appeal the ruling, which raised the question of whether a man could only be considered a sperm donor in Kansas if he goes through a physician.

"It takes a very sweeping reading of the statute," he said.

Swinnen said Marotta and his wife have no children of their own but have fostered a daughter, adding he was simply trying to help a couple who wanted a child.
