Question about Leucine content in Whey

When a label states the amino acid profile "per 100 grams," does that mean per 100 gram serving size or 100 grams of protein?

For example, a 30g scoop of Syntrax Whey Shake has 23 grams of protein and 6780mg of leucine "per 100 grams."

    Is the leucine content (30/100)*6780= 2,034mg or (23/100)*6780= 1,560mg?

    Yes

Based on those numbers, there is 1560 mg or 1.5 grams of Leucine in 23 grams of your Syntrax Whey Shake.

    Whey Protein

The majority of whey proteins are composed of 9 - 10% Leucine.

Syntrax Whey Shake's Leucine content is 6.78%.

    Leucine

Based on your question on Leucine content, you are interested the anabolic (Mammalian Target of Rapamycin) role it plays.

    Glutamine

While Luecine is considered an "Anabolic Trigger", glutamine plays a major role in assisting it.

This article does a nice job of explaining the importance how Glutamine enhances Leucine in protein synthesis.

Thanks. I didn't know most whey proteins were 10% leucine. I guess the one I'm using is a bit under-dosed. $37.99 for 5 pounds, you get what you pay for.

Yeh most protein powders aren't going to give you a lot of Luecine content. That's why it's good to supplement with extra BCAAs on top of protein
