I think it's the real deal. Between the two shows, he's been going since the early 80's, I think. Hope Conan steps in when he leaves.

Unfortunately not. I guess it was inevitable just like with Jay Leno and Johnny Carson before them.

Stephen Colbert To Replace David Letterman in 2015

    Well, that didn’t take long.

Announced today, CBS is set for Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman as the host of The Late Show when Letterman steps down in 2015. Colbert will be leaving more than 9 seasons of his own Colbert Report and, most likely, his sarcastic Colbert character behind at Comedy Central. There had been rumors that Colbert was a front runner for CBS, though it would seem that, having free range seemingly at The Colbert Report with Emmy and Peabody wins, it would take a very attractive offer to lure him away.

Well, that offer is hosting The Late Show, and already I’m anxious to see what Colbert does with a much more traditional format of late night show coming from, arguably, a more avant garde version of a late night talk show. This news also sets forth a bunch of other cogs in motion to change the late night line-up across CBS and Comedy Central. Who will replace Colbert? Will Craig Ferguson stay around as his contract expires at the same time as Letterman’s? If he doesn’t, who will replace Ferguson?

Of course, there is sure to be criticism by those calling for someone who isn’t an “older white guy” to host The Late Show; the world of late night is primarily hosted by older caucasian men. Perhaps it would be just a consolation for those who wanted something different in a late night host, but it’s hard to argue that Colbert hosting The Late Show wouldn’t be a whole bunch of fun.

    So much for #CancelColbert.

Craig Ferguson To Leave THE LATE LATE SHOW at End of 2014

The world of late night is already gearing up for a big shift with the move of Stephen Colbert from Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report to CBS’ The Late Show, succeeding David Letterman. But tonight, Craig Ferguson has announced at the taping of his show that he will be leaving his gig as host of CBS’ The Late Late Show at the end of the year.

Ferguson’s contract was set to expire at the same time as Letterman’s, and Colbert’s hiring reportedly triggered a payment to Ferguson for being passed over, pursuant to his contract. This leaves a vacant spot at 12:35e/p at the outset of 2015. Though Letterman has been vague about the timing of his exit, Ferguson’s plan to leave after the holidays might suggest that the passing of The Late Show torch will happen sooner rather than later in 2015.

Some are speculating that Chelsea Handler might be in the running for this slot, especially due to some photos posted by Handler with some CBS paperwork. The pairing of Handler and Colbert might be an odd one if the speculation proved true, but reports about Handler negotiating with Netflix for a new show might indicate that the speculation is misdirected. Whoever CBS gets to follow Colbert would most likely skew younger, the way Ferguson did when following Letterman. Among those who tested for the slot before Ferguson got it were Michael Ian Black and Aisha Tyler; those two could potentially be in the running again.

Yes, Ferguson is leaving b/c he did not get Letterman's job. Colbert got it.

No opinion really, as I watch both little.

    Is Colbert insightful? Funny?

THE MINORITY REPORT WITH LARRY WILMORE to Replace THE COLBERT REPORT

The mystery of who or what would replace The Colbert Report at Comedy Central has officially come to a close. Comedy Central announced yesterday that Larry Wilmore, the Senior Black Correspondent at The Daily Show, has been chosen to take over the coveted 11:30PM slot. The new series, The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore, is set to premiere in January 2015.

According to Comedy Central’s press release, The Minority Report will “…provide a platform to underrepresented voices in comedy and media providing comedy, commentary and a cultural point of view on the news of the day.” Hopefully, this new addition to the late night scene will keep the Internet and its trolling hordes at bay. Wilmore should be familiar to The Daily Show loyal, but you might also recognize him from his Showtime special Race, Religion, and Sex, or that time he gave Michael Scott some diversity training on the U.S. version of The Office.

This news gives us a bit of a clearer picture of what the new late night television landscape will look like in 2015. Though we know Stephen Colbert is set to take over for David Letterman at The Late Show, Letterman has been vague about when exactly that would occur. The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore, on the other hand, has a pretty obvious start date (the beginning of 2015) that gives us a better idea of when The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will debut.

Now that Comedy Central has made their move, it’s time for CBS to choose a replacement for Craig Ferguson at The Late Late Show — and the pressure is on. So far, the #latelatenormnorm movement for Norm MacDonald to replace Ferguson seems to still be going strong.
