MURRYSVILLE (KDKA/AP) – At least 24 people have been injured in a stabbing at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville. The attack occurred in crowded hallways just minutes before the start of school.

Westmoreland County updated the victim count late Wednesday evening, saying 24 people had been injured. (21 students stabbed, 1 security guard stabbed, and 2 others injured) At least five students were critically wounded, including a boy who was on a ventilator after a knife pierced his liver, missing his heart and aorta by only millimeters, doctors said. An injured school officer was discharged.

Witnesses said the boy with the knives at first tackled a freshman and stabbed him in the belly, then got up and ran wildly down the hall, slashing other students. Nate Moore, 15, said he saw the first attack and was going to try to break it up when the boy got up and slashed his face, requiring 11 stitches.

“It was really fast. It felt like he hit me with a wet rag because I felt the blood splash on my face. It spurted up on my forehead,” he said. The attacker “had the same expression on his face that he has every day, which was the freakiest part,” Moore said. “He wasn’t saying anything. He didn’t have any anger on his face. It was just a blank expression.” KDKA has confirmed that 16-year-old Alex Hribal is the suspect arrested for the stabbings. He is a sophomore at the high school.

He was transported from the Murrysville Police Department by police car, and reportedly taken to a local hospital for superficial wounds, and then returned. Hribal has now been charged with four counts of attempted homicide, 21 other counts in knife rampage.

Investigators haven’t determined a motive, but Seefeld said they’re looking into reports of a threatening phone call between the suspect and another student the night before. Seefeld didn’t specify whether the suspect reportedly received or made the call. Michael Float, an 18-year-old senior, said he had just gotten to school when he saw “blood all over the floor” and smeared on the wall near the main entrance. Then he saw a wounded student. “He had his shirt pulled up and he was screaming, ‘Help! Help!’” Float said. “He had a stab wound right at the top right of his stomach, blood pouring down.”

Float said he saw a teacher applying pressure to the wound of another student who had been stabbed. Float said he knew who the suspect was but didn’t know him personally. “I heard he’s a very nice kid. I don’t know what drove him to do it,” Float said. Jeff Dahlke with the security company who provides security for Franklin Regional High School says the suspect was armed with two knives. “The alarm went off, and students started rushing outside, the security guard outside rushed in, and came upon his supervisor, and a vice principal who had the suspect in custody on the ground and was trying to control him, and try to get the weapons away from him,” Dahlke said.

Police say that security guard was stabbed in the abdomen. UPMC Presby says a 17-year-old victim is on life support, and in critical condition. Doctors say it appears a large knife was used in the stabbings, causing damage, but missing the teen’s heart. Two student victims were in critical condition, according to Dr. Mark Rubino of Forbes Medical Center. The CEO of Forbes Hospital tells KDKA’s Heather Abraham that one-student applied pressure to an injured classmate, possibly saving student’s life.

Five patients had been discharged, including three 15-year-old boys, a 16-year-old girl and an adult, who is believed to be the school officer who suffered only superficial wounds. Hospital officials say patients range from 15-to-60-years old.

According to a witness, the stabbings happened in the science wing of the building. “One of the students pulled the alarm, my daughter said, after the incident happened to clear the school. She reported to me it was a 10th grade student,” parent Tim Graham told KDKA. The chief said someone, possibly a student, pulled a fire alarm after seeing some of the victims being stabbed. Although that created chaos, he said, it also resulted in students running out of the school to safety faster than they might have otherwise.

“The fire alarm being pulled probably assisted with the evacuation of the school and that was a good thing that that was done,” Seefeld said. Several students tell us that Franklin Regional student Nate Scimio pulled the fire alarm and was stabbed. Scimio posted this photo on his Instagram account showing him at Children’s Hospital with a stab wound to the arm.

Clearly we should ban all knives.

Clearly we should ban all knives.

Or anything with a sharp edge or point brother, better to be safe than sorry. Sharpened pencils, needles of any sort, forks, and keys are just some everyday things that really need to be looked in to. I mean think how much damage a key could do, my key for my car is stupid long for just a car key. I could fall and it could actually stab my leg from my pant pocket with enough force. Or someone else could have the same key and put it through his finger and punch the shit out of my face with it. This stuff needs to be regulated! Or we can think logically and realize that these isolated incidents don't require government action.

Now hold on Heavy! We haven't blamed everybody else yet. Let's see...how about violent video games? Maybe violent movies? What about the kid's education? Hey wait a second...HOW ABOUT THE FUCKING PARENTS? This shootings and stabbing all the time and the retarded education system that is in place are the main reasons my wife and I are thinking about homeschooling our daughter. I mean she is seven years old and a cop is at her school all the time. She came home one day and told me a drill the school had to do in the event of a shooting or terrorist act WTF!

That is to condition the kids into a constant state of fear that is only quelled by having a uniformed government employee present. ie. police, soldier, etc.

schools here have been doing lock down drills since 2001 at least.
to be honest my kids are never concerned about it and the cops are always at the schools but the cops talk to the kids and like them.
its obv your call but its never been something that made me consider home schooling the rugrats..

what HAS is some little bastard kids and an entire school system they were in previously.

Well another factor SheriV is we are blessed that our daughter is gifted. She is in first grade and reads at a 6 grade level. We got another letter from the school asking us if we want her in the accelerated program and if she can be tested(I assume her IQ?). She always tells me and the wife she is bored at school so we worry if she is really getting anything out of it. That plus all the violence has really got us thinking about the homeschool thing.

I've thought about home schooling mainly due to the gypos and scumbag kids (cos of shitty parents) in school. But the kids would miss out on the interaction between others and I'm not sure that would benefit them long term. Although it is a different ball game in the UK, where we only have fire drills in school ..

We were worried about that too brother. We starting looking into it though and found that you have to meet once a week to make sure the ciriculam(spell) is on par with what you are teaching for homeschooling so she would see all the other kids there. Between that and sports(my daughter loves gymnastics, softball, and basketball) I figured she would get plenty of interaction. I mean other then the basketball which is strictly a school sport, softball and gymnastics have stand alone programs here.

^oh that's very true, so far we're signed up to gymnastics, horse riding, swimming, drama (yes really lol ) list goes on & on

I had a friend who was home schooled and he was a dip shit, shit he would do always made me think holy shit your a moron I'll never home school my children if I ever have any. Your child will be the most socially awkward person, and afraid of everything. just saying

kids brought weapons to school since the begining of schools, growing up in new jersey I used to carry a butterfly knife to school everyday , and had a gun pointed at my head in the gym locker room. But there was a real fear of consequence then. Now kids talk back to their parents and arent afraid because the police will arrest parents for abuse

I here you. I know only two home schooled kids. One is in there early 20's the other just turned 19. The 19 year old is a little socially shy and odd at times. The mid 20 year old is as out going as can be. I guess it really once again goes back to the parents. The 19 year old's parents didn't let him do shit. I mean his house was almost a jail. The 20 something got to do a lot of stuff like sports and car clubs(his dad owns a hot rod) so he was given plenty of social opportunity. Either way, both boys will be making money. The 19 year old is going to be a a doctor(I think neuro surgery or something according to the parents). The 20 something is doing some kind of engineering(biochemical or biomedical, not sure). So the 2 homeschooled kids I know will probably be making 6 figures when all is said and done. That's more then I will ever make unfortunately. Socially awkward or not, 6 figures can buy a lot of hookers/escorts!
