    The more soda you drink, the bigger your chance of cancer

    The more sugar sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices you drink, the greater your risk of cancer. French epidemiologists, affiliated with the Sorbonne discovered this. Their study, involving more than one hundred thousand French internet users, appeared in BMJ.

    The researchers recruited their 101,257 study participants via the internet in 2009. The participants were older than 18. The researchers followed them a little longer than five years.

    The study participants drank relatively few soft drinks. The unsweetened fruit juices were the most popular in this research population.

    The more soft drinks with sugars or fruit juices the study participants drank, the greater their risk of cancer.

    Every 100 milliliters of juice or soft drinks per day increased the risk of cancer by 12-19 percent.

    Soft drinks with low-calorie sweeteners did not increase the risk of cancer. However, it should be noted that in the population studied the intake of soft drinks - and certainly the intake of light soft drinks - was low. Perhaps it was too low to detect any cancer-stimulating effects of artificial sweeteners.

    "In a context where the World Health Organization is questioning the level of evidence of the scientific data supporting the implementation of a tax on sugary drinks, the results of this observational study based on a large prospective cohort suggest that a higher consumption of sugary drinks is associated with the risk of overall cancer and breast cancer", write the French.

    "Of note, 100% fruit juices were also associated with the risk of overall cancer in this study."

    "If these results are replicated in further large-scale prospective studies and supported by mechanistic experimental data, and given the large consumption of sugary drinks in Western countries, these beverages would represent a modifiable risk factor for cancer prevention, beyond their well established impact on cardiometabolic health."

    "These data support the relevance of existing nutritional recommendations to limit sugary drink consumption, including 100% fruit juice, as well as policy actions, such as taxation and marketing restrictions targeting sugary drinks, which might potentially contribute to the reduction of cancer incidence."
