Use a little common sense, dickhead, it's not just about porn, it's about freedom and the ability to choose what you want to hear and see. I don't like The OC, but I am not about to take away your right to watch it.

EDIT:I rephrased the first staement as it did not refelct what I was trying to say.

Bubba ... he has a point ... :) ... someone has decided for you as Americans what is and isn't moral. This just happens to be about a television show ... but I'm sure more is coming.

All they are talking about is the free and public airways...not cable. The point he is making is a stretch at best.

I'd better bail out here as I don't care about politics and have no knowledge to base my opinions on. I know that most here have a definite opinion when it comes to politics ... I'll bail out quietly

That doesn't stop anyone else...hang around!

Who says we have a "right" to watch the OC or VS shows???

I don't think that is one of our inalienable rights.

Land of the Free, does that ring a bell? How about the first amendment?

A court case involving the internet...

The first attack on the Internet came when the Communications Decency Act surfaced in the Supreme Court. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) fought against this bill that stated:

???whoever uses any interactive computer service to display in a manner available to a person under 18years of age, any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards, sexual or excretory activities or organs . . . shall be fined under Title 18, or be imprisoned no more than two years, or both.??? (Reno v. ACLU)

Obviously, under this bill, the government would decide what is considered as ???patently offensive.??? What may be offensive to one person, may not be to another. This bill would have severely restricted private Internet organizations had it not been struck down in the court case Reno v. ACLU.
Reasoning for the destruction of this bill was that government attempts ???to censor cyberspace abridges the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment??? (???Court???).

Sorry but Fox, NBC et al do NOT have the right to air any-damn-thing they want on the free/public airways. So if NBC wanted to air porn at 3 pm on weekdays, stoping it would be a violation of the 1st amendment?

Let's torch the libraries and museum's making sure we douse the paintings of boobies and books discussing fornication with gasoline.

Let's say that I agree with that interpretation fo a sec... what about my "right" to not be subjected to "smut" ??? Who's protecting my right??? ...and I'm referring to unsolicitated "smut"

I'm not going to get in this debate too heavily since it gets a little too heated for me these days. What I will say...I've always voted Republican. I voted for Bush. I'm a hunter/gun owner, I support military spending, support the war in Iraq, etc...in general, I'm pretty far to the right (aside from environmental issues which I'm very liberal on). My problem is that Bush has left me with no one to vote for in the next election. I think his "faith based initiatives" are bullshit, and that he's spending far too much time on issues that are none of his/our business (gay marriage, porn, etc). I'm SURE HAS HELL NOT voting for Kerry, so I'm left without a candidate to support.

You bought a TV, you pay for cable, EVERY cable/satellite TV Box has a Parental Control option as do most newer TVs. I am pretty sure you know which channels are obscene and which are not. Of the broadcast channels, none are allowed to have anything remotely obsene on between the hours of 6am and 9pm, so you can CHOOSE to watch during those hours. Although some may consider soaps offensive, you know when they are on too. If that doesn't work, use the power button, all tv's have them. It is not the government's job to police what you and your children watch, it is your own.

That would be an extreme reaction, at the least.

I love art, sculptures, literature, etc. I was in heaven standing in front of Michael's David in Florence and seeing all the other art treasured for hundreds of years. It's not smut. Art is one way we study cultures from the past and their development.

Shows like the O.C. are not art. It's smut, they are simply using the down and nasty side of sex to sell their show. If they'd show the beautiful side of sex the show would be more on it's way to being considered art.

I think we all know that standard has been out-the-window for a long time.

Put me in as a write-in. :D

I agree with you on all of this, Var. In fact, Reagan was my favorite president. I have hunted since I was like 6 and believe the military needs money to be strong. I actually voted for Bush over Gore, ironic ain't it?

I have a felling the networks did not get together and say, "Boy, we have to really nail this indecency thing down." I am sure political pressure was used.

I really don't wanna get into argueing politics cuz it goes fuckin nowhere:suicide:

but what i will repeat what Howard himself said this morning. something to the idea of "as soon as i started putting the Bush campaign down with some of their ludacris ideas and favoring Kerry is when the entire FCC came crashing down"........a little ironic if you ask me

Ironic and a little bit embarrassing when he makes moves that go against everything I believe. Of course, I'm not saying Gore would have been a better choice. :D

So enforce IT rather than impose new, stricter standards.

You love art BF, I don't think Ashcroft sees it your way. This is a fairly well-known incident.

Attorney General John Ashcroft, offended at being repeatedly photographed in the Justice Department's Great Hall with a large naked breast near his head, covered two partially nude Art Deco statues, the Spirit of Justice and the Majesty of Justice, with drapes. »

Nope. Right band, wrong song. :D Its from Cry Freedom. Appropriate in this thead, eh? I'm a ridiculous DMB fan. Followed them around for two summers. Dont get me started.

I knew I had heard it before, i was just listening to he and Tim yesterday and thought it was Jane.

Have u seen Dave and Tim? They're amazing!

Television, film, magazines are our new art form. Since when does art have to only depict beautiful things. There are millions of books, paintings, sculptures and play's depicting the darker side of humanity. Art documents life in our time so that future generations can look back and study our culture. In India exists Khajuraho a temple covered with statues in thousands of different erotic positions and very graphic I think it's beautiful. Then again I see a Samurai's full body armor and sword which I know was used to kill and I still find beauty in it. The world will never be all good, it needs a balance of darkness and light.

It's a TV new show. Mostly about the drama of these rich teens hooking up.

I have never seen them, would love to. If I ever get tired of DMB, I can throw in Dave and Tim and it is totally different. Tim did some really good stuff with Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule that I downloaded. Superb.

BF, isn't that show ridiculous? It is like 90210 without all of that plot baggage. Utter garbage.

Definitely check them out if they come around again! Do you trade shows at all? If so, PM me. I have 30+ DMB, 15 or so Ben Harper, Pat McGee Band, etc...etc... :)

You mean mp3s? I have a shitload of Dave, but not specific shows, just a sort of best of compilation

A)How the hell do you get it for free?
Get you an old satillite system(Dish network etc) with a card in the receiver. Then there are many internet sites that carry card burners. You buy one, insert your card into the burner and you download a code from several sites to put into your burner. Now it is a game and they scranble the channels every so often. All you do is take your card out of the reciever, put back into the burner and download another code. Takes 10 minutes.

NO...not mp3. MP3 loses quality every time its copied. The shows I have are straight from DAT or SHN format.
