Strawberries are native to the Americas, as well as Europe. These popular berries were grown and enjoyed by the Ancient Romans, Medieval French, and Native Americans. Over seventy varieties exist, and strawberry preparations have been used to treat skin problems, fevers, and gum problems.
Vitamin C
A study at the University of California at San Francisco was conducted to determine the effects of vitamin C and eczema. The study involved 10 people, ranging in age from 3 to 21, with severe eczema. The individuals were given vitamin C for a period of time, and a placebo for the same amount of time. While taking the vitamin, the volunteers noted decreased symptoms and required half as much medication.
Vital for a healthy immune system
Protects the body from oxidation
Helps to regulate cholesterol levels
Encourages iron absorption
Helps to manufacture and maintain collagen, a protein that is the basis for connective tissue
Helps asthmatics breathe easier
Speeds up recovery from pneumonia, mononucleosis, hepatitis, and other viral infections
Strengthens immune system by stimulating T-cells, B-cells, and macrophages (cell eaters which ingest and destroy invaders)
Protects the heart by regulating the liver???s production of cholesterol
Aids in the fight against cancer through its antioxidant properties
Weight-loss aid: 3 grams of Vitamin C was given to obese women, 6 weeks later with no diet change the vitamin C takers lost twice as much as those on the placebo.{Vitamins}
Fiber
Helps to keep blood sugar under control.
Protects against cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas, breast, and prostate
Helps to lower total cholesterol, as well as LDL.
Folic acid
Folic acid helps to prevent cancer-causing mutations to body cells by regulating cell division, and by maintaining healthy DNA and RNA.
Also has the ability to strengthen the immune system, and fight the cancers that do arise.
Ellagic acid
Found in strawberries, grapes, and cherries.
A phenolic compound that exhibits both anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic activity in vitro and in vivo (2).
Ellagic acid was determined to significantly reduce lung cancer tumor incidence to 20% from the control value of 72.2% ( a fifty percent reduction)
Ellagic acid suppressed the lung tumor incidence mainly by acting at the initiation phase of the carcinogenesis (1).
Ellagic acid disarms carcinogens before they can make healthy cells cancerous.
p-coumaric and chlorogenic acid
Chlorogenic acid may be effective in protecting against oxidative damage.
May inhibit potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic reactions in the body (3).
Bind to nitric oxides and prevents the conversion into potentially cancer-causing nitrosamines (4).
Strawberries also:
Have been found to destroy herpes simplex and other viruses in laboratory experiments.
Have been found to protect against oxidative stress in the brain, helping to retain memory and the ability to perform motor tasks.
