Oooh behaaave!!!Dale Mabry said:Is that any relation to Mr. Austin Powers' Fascia?
P-funk said:it is kind of like snagging the muscle..Usually things that cause it are an over extension of somr sort or a knot that has developed in the muscles fascia creating it to function improperly through an ROM. that is why I push people to do the foam roller so much. it rolls out the fascia and breaks up adhesions and knots that form from things like stress, overuse, past injuires etc....Think of it like this. If you have a rope and there is a knot in the middle of it and you and I decide to pull on opposite ends. No matter how hard we pull that knot wont go away, right. It will still be there, if anything we make it worse of a knot until one day guess what happens....a pull or a tear. But, that nevers happens at the knot. It always happens on one of the sides. So, instead of correcting the problem, the knot stays and knew knots form. So, people end of getting more pulls in or around the same place from all these little knots. If you go to a good physical therapist they will tell you that you don't pull a muscle in the exact same place twice, it is always around the same place but never the same because the knot is still there. So, if you are tight, stretching is good BUT deadling with the fascia is also iimportant. Things like Active release, SMF on the foam roller, activation therapy, massage, rolfing, etc...are all methods that deal with the fascia of the body and help to release these problems. it is the same reason why when you do to PT with a pulled muscle they have you do the foam roller. Gotta break up those knots.
hope that helps.
