    Should have taken the money?

I was selling back a book to the book store this morning and the computer rang it up as $75.50 buyback price. The guy at the counter started giving me money back, got to $25, then gave me a $100 bill ontop of it (this is $50 too much... I assume he thought the $100 was a $50 bill). I immediately caught it and said "this is too much," while sliding the $100 back to him. The guy was shocked and gratefully said "thank you!"

I called my girlfriend to tell her about it because we have this thing where we share our "good deeds of the day" and she kind of bitched me out asking me "why would you do something like that?!" And I know my parents would have said the same thing... "if it's their mistake, it's okay."

What do you guys feel about this type of situation?

Also, not that it's that relevant, but I am also broke right now and my girlfriend knows this. (I'm broke because of spending too much on her by the way)

Props. I would've done the same. I honestly couldn't care less about the assraping bookstores losing the $50, but the person behind the counter may get in trouble for it.

Your integrity isn't worth $90 is it?

if you hadn't given it back you'd have been literally taking it from his pocket. he'd have lost hours of pay for his mistake.

In your scenario you did the right thing. Had the computer rung it up wrong, you should have taken the money and given it to charity, those fuckwads ass-rape you by giving you 50% of the value of the book and sell it for 80%. The bookstore, not the charity, but I imagine there is a lot of ass-raping going on at charities as well.

I probably would have had a panic attack and ate the money.

Having been a cashier before I would have given the money back, but at Walmart sometimes it's so busy a cashier will sometimes think they swiped something but they didn't if I catch it on the receipt I never go back to get them to charge for it because no one will ever no and they really don't want to have to ring up another transaction....

I realize, after further evaluation, your girlfriend needs a slap across the forehead with a cock.

A small or family(etc) run shop, yea I'd give the money back to.

Walmart or any big corporation I'd feel no guilt taking the money off them, I mean, they've no problem raping your wallet. Fuck Corporations.

Thanks for the praises guys. I was actually surprised how many people told me I should have kept the money. My brother even went on to tell me that a lot of places don't make their cashiers directly liable for the cash in their drawers if they are short. He told me several stories of employees stealing from Best Buy and getting fired but not prosecuted. He said discrepancies are generally handled with write-ups or termination if severe enough (in cases where there is proof of wrongdoing or I'd imagine losses in huge amounts).

Is Wal-Mart really raping your wallet though? I would have thought the logic behind this was that a large corporation would have no problem suffering the losses as opposed to a small/family run shop where such losses could take out their business.

I use to be a bank teller, and a customer once returned 200 extra bucks. I wouldn't have gotten fired, but I would have been under the radar. Needless to say, I would have done the same thing man. You did the right thing.

Yup. My concious and mind are constantly running. I would never be able to spend it. Not to mention Karma, shit comes back around one way or another.

Great point about the conscience. I thought about this a bit more, and I came to the conclusion that when it actually comes to it, I just don't think I would ever take "money accidently given over the correct amount" to begin with. I guess hypothetically if I had taken money, I would probably feel extremely guilty about it.
