Can Michael Steele lead GOP out of woods? Republican National Committee picks first black chair

WASHINGTON - Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele was the upset choice Friday to become the new head of the Republican National Committee, first African-American to head the party.

"This is awesome," said Steele. "It's time for something completely different."

Steele pledged a 50-state campaign to rebuild the GOP and spread its influence outside its southern and southwestern base.

He drew notice last fall when he brought party members to their feet at John McCain's GOP nominating convention in Minnesota, urging delegates to push for energy independence with the chant "Drill Baby Drill."

It quickly became a catchphrase for McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

Steele, 50, a partner in a Washington, D.C., law firm and head of the party's GOPAC fund-raising engine, won the chairmanship after several ballots that saw current Chairman Mike Duncan drop out of the race.

GOP hardliners and evangelicals had backed former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who later threw his support to Steele.

"We're back on the path to becoming a majority party again," Blackwell said.

They're hoping that Affirmative Action will work for them, too.

Michael Steele is a great guy.. Unfortunately it looks more like a "us too" move, and maybe it was.. but that shouldn't take away from him. I've heard him talk several times.. what I've heard was spot-on.

This is worse than McCain selecting Palin to appeal to white women who were disappointed that Clinton didn't get the nomination.
