The stuff they used to do simply was all bals and no brains. Many of them got away with it, but can you imagine if you trained a client like that today?

I think the way I place it, it's on the upper traps on that big bone that sticks out at the base of your neck. I find it uncomfortable any lower. Should it be lower?? I would be able to do it lower

Not sure what you mean about dumb, I'm guessing if there is a leg press and you use the smith instead it might be depending on the situation.

I don't have room for the leg press in my home gym and with my current setup find the smith leg press superior anyway. But I don't do it from a flat position.

I fabricated a special decline bench that rests against the floor and do my leg presses on my smith at home. With the mild, about 15 deg, angle it hits my quads hard, the smith has a 7 deg tilt so the effective angle is 22 deg. I find it superior to a leg press machine. 3-4 plates on each side is enough where on a 45 deg leg press I would be using 5 or 6. Since the weight is being pushed vertically you don't have the advantage of the incline.

The bench makes the difference as I started out trying it from a flat position and it placed a lot of stress on the lower back.

I may make a video of my setup on my next leg day and post it on youtube for you folks to comment on.

Just a regular guy.

When I squat, I always try to keep my shoulders back just like when I'm deadlifting. Keeping the shoulders back like this could allow you to place the bar below where you're currently placing it. You shouldn't be placing it on your vertebra prominens, that would really hurt.

Has anyone else ever tried the Manta Ray Rear Squat Harness? If you have a problem with the bar hurting your shoulders and neck its a pretty awesome product. The gym I use in Iraq has it so now I need to buy one when I go home.

Now I can't use the hurt neck excuse to get out of squats ........what was I thinking.

We actually had them in high school when I was lifting with the football team. I think it helps to train you in where to place the bar. You can get comfortable with the bar in the correct position on your back but you don't have to support the bar as much.

After using that, I was pretty comfortable squatting without any pad.
