look at that shit

Seriously what the fuck the bar is bent
<throws in towel>

ON a more serious note; I did smith machine squats today because I really needed to do squats but my gym doesn't have even a free bar let alone a cage or stand. I feel so bad.
Now my right knee is aching. But I've never felt like I've worked my quads as hard as I do on smith machines. Furthermore (apart from the knee-pain, which might be from another poopie-the leg press machine), I did not feel anything wrong with the movement, no akwardness, no aches or pains anywhere, whereas squatting free bar sometimes hurts my lower back and neck.

But just a question: what are good exercises/variations to build width in the thighs?? Both inner and outer

There are no barbells in your gym? Seriously?

community centre ran by the government

need to ensure that nobody "gets hurt" in the gym so they have more machines than free weights.

But yea, this is just a period before uni when I'm really out of money till my exams are over then i'll get a 3 month gym membership at a gym with a barbell lol.

I've seen guys do leg presses on a smith machine. Lay down on a bench and push up.

Yea I couldn't figure that out myself. Especially when 10 ft away there are two leg press machines.

I see allot of people doing single leg squats on a smith too. Again another I don't do but am wondering are they as bad as doing back squats on a smith. I have done fronts on a smith when I first started doing fronts. I didn't think they were too bad since the back is not involved so much.

You could do goblet squats if you don't have a barbell. I like step ups as well.

Single Leg stuff if you don't have a barbell all the way. You can do bilateral stuff buts its difficult to get enough weight to actually make it worthwhile. I guess you can do them for higher reps if you aren't into the strength stuff.

Re; the leg press on the smith, IMO that is a few fractured ribs and/or collapsed lungs just waiting to happen.

Re; the bar bending. He is/was a beast no doubt about it, but the bar bending is not really a big deal. Crappy bars bend and back then they were even crappier than they are now. Hell when I load 335 on the bar at my gym there's very visibly bend. The serious bars powerlifters use (Texas Power Bars and Ivanko, I believe make some serious bars) won't bend for shit until you get into the 500's or more.

Seriously Yanik, Arnie is no longer the same in terms of his physique....

No offense...just my opinion.

I think Sylvester Stallone STILL rocks, There's a Prince's post some where in the open chat which shows Sly with great physique at an age of 50 or 60 something.....i have no idea how old Arnie is but he's not in the same league any more.

the bar is bent permanently, not because of the weight, it's that way so it rests across the traps more comfortably.

I used to use folded towel below the bar cos it used to hurt where the bar rest's while squatting....I guess bent bar is much better.

I've been told you can figure an up to a 10% increase in lift weight by using a powerbar. Something about the flex in cheap bars screwing up leverage.

Well you can't keep that kind of physique your whole life dude. I mean the guy was the top BB'er in the world, that kind of conditioning doesn't stick around. A few years at the top and then its all downhill. Aside from that, that picture is deceiving because from what I know that was taken as Arnold was recovering from his valve replacement surgery. Heart surgery and heavy lifting don't mix, hell in the beginning you gotta make sure you don't get up too fast, then you gotta make sure you can take a step or two, then graduate to climbing stairs etc.

Aside from all of that, Arnold is an accomplished individual in general. He went to the top of two different professions and is ascending to the top of politics. His physique isn't his most important asset anymore, although he is still a big guy or atleast he looks to be in decent shape in his suits and such. Stallone however is still in show business, and runs a supplement company. His physique is a top priority and he stays on top of it all the time.

Arnold is still a bad ass, even if he can't squat 450lbs anymore with a 30'' waist and 20'' arms etc.

hahaha, no offense taken. Those comments were not made in anger, just clarification.

I respect both of those guys but Arnold is a personal hero of mine. He is just a very motivated/motivational person, modern day Renaissance man if you will. I mean I still have The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, it was the first book I ever read about BB'ing. Even though its all bullshit I still like to take it out and thumb through it every once in a while.

You may want to try doing front squats for a while. That's one of the few things I use a smith machine for every once in a while.

I use a pad that wraps around the bar when doing squats.

I hate squats but I love them; that great feeling you get when doing them but the sheer exhaustion you get after is sickening!

I'm the exact opposite. Before and during I'd rather blow my brains out but, once I'm done I feel like I could take over the world!

well the last 3-4 reps are just like hell. While doing them I actually think about what it would feel like being in hell compared to the feeling I get during those squats.
Then after a brief feeling of nausea then my quads go numb

Lyle says they are better than squats for building quads.

Are you allowing your knees to come together?

A: ditch the pussy pad, bud. seriously, you'll thank me.
You don't need it. The bar fits nicely across your shoulders and sits in between two vertebre(sp) comfortably.

Atm my shoulders arent very flexible so they dont go back far enough for the bar to rest on the "meat" so it rests on a bone on my back and its really uncomfortable

The leg press only goes to 90 degrees which is quite bad for your knees.
Maybe the ache had nothing to do with the exercises because it was only my right knee and it was the dullest of aches but it seems to come every leg push day.

btw when doing DB squats I tend to do them more like deadlifts with my arms hanging down. The weight of DBs for effective squats is too heavy for me to support with my shoulders

So fix the problem then. Don't mask it.

If you don't the mobility to get back there - front squat and in between sets work on your mobility.

Does it really take that much shoulder mobility for you to get the bar in a comfortable position? I'm not sure about my shoulder mobility, but I don't think I've ever been uncomfortable with the bar resting on my shoulders. I feel a lot less comfortable with the pad on the bar.
