Speech on Resistance Training
This is relatively 'open chat-ish' but whatever.
I have to give a 10 minute speech on Monday. The idea is persuade everyone to weight train. Format is Intro/ 2-3 main points/Conclusion. Standard stuff. 10 minutes total. The audience is everyone, not just people interested in aesthetic improvement. I'm thinking about using the benefits related to weight loss as one point as well as using a Mark Rippetoe style 'the stronger you are the longer you'll live' type approach for the second point. However, I feel like those can be merged into one point if a better idea comes along for a second point. Thoughts on some ideas? Any creative ideas for the introduction/conclusion would be nice too.

Quality of life as we age.....muscle mass takes a steady decline from the age of 25 on. Nervous system starts to slow down, decreasing our power output and making us more susceptible to falls as we age, etc....While resistance training can't STOP these things from happening (they are a way of life), it can drastically slow them down.

Does it have to be weight training, or exercise in general?
The benefits of exercise on cognition PubMed Central Search Benefits of exercise on depression/mood PubMed Central is all free full journal articles. Lots of stuff from the National Athletic Trainer's Assocaition. Exercise and Depression In addition to what Patrick said above you can also mention the effects of exercise on bone density maintenance in women, especially as they begin to age. There are also studies done which look at exercise (not even specific Physical Therapy stuff, but just general weight training) aiding in relief of pain. I know Patrick talks of one such study somewhere in his blog but I'm too lazy to find it. Blood pressure, blood sugar (diabetes), body composition, efficiency/functionality of weight training vs LISS Cardio, the fun/variety factor.

All looking good so far. I'll likely incorporate all that was mentioned. And Yanick, it needs to be weight training specific.
The path I'm thinking about taking is speaking on the relatively short term effects (mood, cognition, blood pressure, physical appearance/body comp), and then getting into the long term effects such as muscle mass decline, longevity, bone density etc. Any other ideas outside of what was mentioned would be great.

Women invariably notice an increase in functional strength - the world just doesn't seem as heavy when you're strong. For example, I didn't used to be able to flip the water bottle for the cooler at work - now it's nothing. I mean, it weighs the same as a plate, I load those all the time.
I have had several DEXAs over the last few years. When I dieted down to my avatar and profile pix, my bone density showed up as three standard deviations higher than normal - for a woman of twenty. I was forty two at the time.
Wondering where to start? Confused? This will get you started.

A buddy of mine has been doing a spot on a local radio talk show for about two months now. Debunking a bunch of the popular myths about weight training is a good start as well as highlighting all of the pluses mentioned above.
It is amazing how many people won't even start with weights for fear of getting huge and muscular.
