Need advice regarding lifting heavy weights

I'm sort of new to weight lifting. I actually starting a personal training program about 4 months ago. The program lets me progress with more more weights and exercises every 3 to 4weeks. Now, that I'm at a point where my heart rate remains low thoughout the cardo and weight training so I am able to get more exercies done in my 1 hour session.

My problem is that I am only able to weight train 2x a week. The trainers still send me on to the next phase. I suppose I'm ready? However, last week I started in a new program doing hamstring curls on the machine. my goal was to do 12 reps. and 2 sets with heavier weights. I could not get my legs up after about 6 reps. I was really struggling and in pain. Is one suppose to work through pain? I was afraid of pulling a muscle or something.
I'm now really frustrated.

If you can't complete X reps with a certain weight, then the weight is too heavy and you need to decrease it. It's really as simple as that.

If you cross the line between challenge and struggle then theres a problem. A burn is fine, but if it actually hurts and you can't get the weight up then it's just too heavy.

Never work through pain... if you start to feel even the slightest bit of pain... stop.
