When to use a belt?
hi
![]() Is there a set standard for when it becomes neccesary to begin using a belt? i realise this question is open to a lot of crossfire but thats the simplest way i can lay it out. i am talking about only using a belt for squats and deads ,i have never used one and have been instructed in the past that it is not neccesary until you are lifting more than 1.5 x bodyweight as a general rule. as far as squats go i am not currently lifting bodyweight but i am pulling 1.5 x bodyweight in the deadlift. opinons on this topic appreciated

I only use one over body weight on deads & squats only. I screwed up my back several years ago but am much stronger & much more attentive to form now but just don't want to take chances of going through that again.

I use it at times even on non-heavy lifts. I use it for deads/squats. It's a good way to teach yourself to breathe air into your diaphragm and push your abs out. It builds a strong foundation for squats/deads.

I was using a belt the other day when doing dead lifts and i felt a pinching sensation in my lower abs it hurt so bad I had to take off the belt and do them without. Was I wearing it too tight or something. Sorry not trying to hijack the thread

I would use it very sparingly. Only for 1RM attempts if you NEED that extra support. The problem with using belts is that it stabilizes your core for you, so your core muscles aren't doing as much work.
If you do this too often you could end up compromising your core muscles to some extent.
