I like Scotty's sig...................Abs are made in the kitchen. With your workout, if you eat right it should be fine!

no, I don't think he's trying to say that.

Of course you have to do ab work. It's a muscle and it needs work too, but if your diet isn't clean enough to lose the layer of fat that hides your abs, no matter how much ab work you do, you're never gonna see them.

As far as I understand, (which is only what my magazines and books tell me), Abs are the most demanding and stubborn, and least result-producing of all muscles. Very frustrating. (For instance, I have seen NO improvements in my abs, even though I dedicate 2 of 5 days of my routines to Abs.)

Some people, however will tell you, that as long as you are working heavy weights your abs get quite a workout just supporting your trunk during your exercises. (I haven't quite bought into this theory.)

But diet is of UTMOST importance. (Another reason I see little results in my gut area.)

    Hope it helps. Cheers!

Well...it does make sense. A lot of what you do in your workouts is supported by your trunk. Push ups, Lat pull downs, Rows, squats. The list is endless.

Also, abs are one of the few muscles in your body that re-oxygenate themselves as quickly as they do. Making it easier to train your abs more frequently than once or twice a week, like your other muscles.

But, you are correct, diet is crucial to your success. So don't blame it on the 4,000 crunches you do in your ab workouts....LOL

Speaking of abs, what is that exercise (I think it's a core exercise) in which your forearms are on the floor and your body is raised in the upward posisition of a push-up? I see trainers having their clients do this all the time, but I have yet to try it. It looks like a core exercise that works the abs, but again, I'm not sure. Anyone have a clue.

You cannot build a strong core or abs relying on trunk stabilization while working out. You must try to do core work to strengthen abs. A recent study in the NSCA journal suggests that you may even work abs to failure before your workout and have no complications during workout, it was theorized that if you did them before you would reduce trunk stability. Also abs are definitaly made in the kitchen but a strong core and deeply muscled abs are not so keep working them even if you cannot see them.

Are you talking about the one where the feet are on a ball and you raise your hips up?

No, not that one. I love that one though.
Pretend like you're in the up push-up position, about to go down, only you're not on your hands, you're on your forearms. And instead of going all the way down you keep your back straight and are halfway up and all your weight is being supported by your forearms. I just did it and it feels like a core exercise and my stomach was definitely tight, but still don't know how long I should it for, etc.

    Did that clear things up???

Do you rotate forward and back?

You're not bending or anything, you're stationary.
