When to work out?
I work as a paramedic 6pm-6am about 3 to 4 days a week. I'm trying to figure what would be the best time for me to work out. I sleep during the day and am active at night.

Wondering where to start? Confused? This will get you started.

I agree. With 12 hours shifts working out before might leave you totally depleted before the end of your shift. Other than that I would think it doesn't make any difference.

I work the same shift on an oil rig and I do my cardio before work and my workout after. I tried to switch them, but always skipped my cardio if I did that. Just too tired.

Really it is up to you. Whatever time is going to allow you to be the more consistent and stick to it.
Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

if your 3-4 days of work are not consecutive i would just recommend working out on your days off if that is possible...
otherwise after work would probably be the best so long as your intesity doesnt suffer

yes im able to sleep at work. the only problem i have with my days off is that i still sleep during the day, granted theres more time on off days. my real problem is getting back into working out after 3yrs off.
i used to workout hard, going from 175lbs to 220lbs and cutting down from 26%bmi to 7%bmi. i ended up tearing my pec. which i didnt realize how bad it was until i kept lifting and after 2 months of pushing through soreness my left arm gave out. nothin like a doc telling you not to touch any weights for 6 months. after that i went back to school and havnt picked up crap but beer and a gut. |

I would suggest, right before work. You should be fresh and well rested.

i think 3-4 good days a week is plenty, on days off or not
remember the majority of your progress, particularly in removing that gut (if it still exsists) will come from diet honestly i think whenever it is comfortable for you to workout is the best time

I think the rush hours at gym are between 5pm and 23pm, so you can train untroubled whenever you go. That is your advantage.
If you can take a nap during work it would not be difficult to you to put up with your long 12 hours working day not only if you train before work but also if you do it after work. As IainDaniel said, it is up to you. You should choose the time that allows you to be the more consistent and you must stick to it. The important stuff is training, no matter when. |
