Holy mother of...what have I done!?

I was doing some cleans this morning, and I either pulled the ever loving hell out of my back, or someone lit me on fire and then kicked the flames out...I am not sure which yet.

My lower left lat maybe? Anyway, slightly lower than halfway down the back, on the left side. It's not too bad unless I try to breathe. Or walk. Other than those 2 things I am fine.

Here is the kicker. I am 250 miles out in the Ocean, so a doctor really isn't an option for me until next week.

Any suggestions on what the hell to do would make me happy. I am in a world of pain right now, and I have a LOT of Tylenol and Motrin floating around in me.

Training the mind is equally, if not more, important than training the body. If you can learn to transcend natural limitations, and force your mind into your muscle, your strength will know no bounds.

Unless the marine wildlife have some sort of "Dolphin's Dope Delivery" program, I am kind of screwed there too.

This is one reason why i don't condone cleans unless you've got to do them for football or something.

Ice it and rest.

Maybe later in the day try alternating cold/hot showers for a little bit?

Cleans are no longer part of my training program. I'm not taking anything away from them, but they aren't for me. As far as I know I was using proper form, I always stretch and warmup before lifting, not sure what happened, but it hurt.

I have been resting it since then, and I am still in pain. Nothing like it was though, definately improving.

Thanks fellas.

jmorrison, I've gotten hurt doing squats and deads and I haven't blown off either of those so don't throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet on cleans.

That being said, I'm terribly sorry to hear you got hurt. How are you today?

Much better. I dont think I tore anything, just pulled the hell out of it. Very very sore, and if I move the wrong way it takes the breath right out of me, brought back a lot of old memories of when I broke my back. Not fun.

Plus being stuck out here during a hurricane because some numbfuck in the office back on land decided that it would miss us, and waited too long to evacuate us has just added to the misery. We are bobbign around like a cork and so my back gets wrenched on a little just walking around.

I hate my life today lol, but it will get better soon! Wednesday I go home!

Prior to this, what was your stretching like?

Not to be an alarmist, but not stretching properly can have serious consequences. It happened to me - I neglected stretching for years. That's why I've been in PT for the last 3-4 months rehabbing an injury I sustained to my shoulder from a lack of flexibility in addition to regaining somewhat normal mobility/flexibility.

It doesn't take long, maybe 10-15 minutes after your workout. 20-30 minutes on off-days.

You may want to consider seeing a PT when you get back to land that's skilled in massage as well.

I did a solid warmup on the bike and some deep stretching before lifting. Honestly I think its because I baby my back so much since the injury. I tend to not do things if they hurt, and a lot of movements in my back are very uncomfortable.

I have a PT from my injury that I may look up when I get home just to help me maybe get back some movement.

You do deep stretching BEFORE you lift?

Why?

To quote Pfunk, "Healthy muscles don't hurt".

If you have discomfort in your back while performing exercises, you are:

A. Performing them incorrectly
B. Have limited mobility and are compensating with other muscles
C. Just plain using too heavy of a weight

I'm sure there's more possibilities that I don't know, but those 3 pop up off the top of my head.

I don't know WHY I stretch before I lift, that's just what I have always been taught to do, is this wrong?

I have very limited mobility in my upper back/neck. I do not have a full range of motion, especially with head movement, and this can cause me to be overly-cautious in my movements.

First, read this: http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/tr...er-warmup.html (Guide to a Proper Warmup)

Second, how much experience do you have with cleans? How long have you been doing them and what types of cleans have you been doing?

Third, what's your program like and are you doing cleans as the first thing in your workout?

EDIT: If you're going to be doing cleans, I recommend doing some work with the bar before you even start.

Apparently I have been warming up very incorrectly for 15 years. I will implement a better warmup strategy immediately.

Cleans are one of my favorite lifts, and I have been doing them forever. Hang cleans that is.

In this particular case they were the second exercise in my schedule, right after deadlift. Maybe too much?
