Showering or sitting in cold water after a workout.

I just have a quick question,

someone in the past once told me that if after a workout you shower with really cold water and or sit in a tub with cold water for about 15 minutes, it will help your muscles recover faster and/or help tighten the skin around your muscles..

Does this have any basis of truth??
    Thanks

Last I heard alternating hot/cold showers was the best, for those that are nitpicky about supposedly improving recovery times. I forget the duration of each, either it was a 1:1 time ratio or 2:1, doh.

Tighten the skin, sure thats a natural reaction to the cold.

I like a hot shower myself, which will loosen you up a bit, too cold and I wouldn't doubt an injury happening from being so "tightened up".

That hot/cold stuff though came from european research, I wouldn't doubt that either though as being beneficial, but I just get in there to wash myself off and loosen up with a "massage of warmth", hopefully that doesn't sound fruity

hmmm...common sense would tell me that a hot shower/bath would help with blood circulation, thus faster recovery.

Pretty interesting that they showed Brock Lesner sitting in ice water for 10-12 min after his workouts.

Maybe its an old throwback machismo thing, i.e. old wives tale of sorts.

Like I said though supposedly alternating hot/cold was the way to go according to europe, I think it was 1:2 ratio of cold:hot, but I am not sure about this.

I just go for warm/hot to massage the muscles and loosen me up.

Just curious, how did you know he sat in there for that long?

You never catch me sitting in cold water for 5 mins unless forced to (Titanic). I'd have to wear a thermal, water resistant bathing suit blocking all sensitive parts!

It makes sense to me that cold water would possibly help recovery times, because being cold forces more blood from the surface of the body deeper into the muscles. Nautural defense against the cold.
