Specific reason for 45lb plates?

    Question Specific reason for 45lb plates?

    Why not 50lbs? I can see 2.5, 5, 10, and even 25lbs, but it stops at 45lbs usually.

    Why not make it 50lbs and go up from there with the smaller plates?

    Oooh, good point.

    I know they go up to 100, but traditionally, most gyms dont go over 45lbs.

    Holy Crap....I couldn't imagine the people in my gym trying to handle 100lb. plates, LOL!

    I thought the reason was similar to what Rahaas said...to sort of make the conversion from standard to metric measure.

    It still doesn't make sense really. The smaller plates don't evenly workout in kilos.

    10 kilos would be 22.5 lbs not a standard 25 lb plate.

    Are Olympic plates arranged in different increments?

    Maybe it's because the bar weighs 45lbs. If you're benching and using 100 pound plates you better have someone holding the bar so it doesn't flip, but it's not a problem with 45's.

    yep. Imagine the general public trying to unload 100lb plates after the meatheads leave them on the bar instead of re-racking them.

    Theres gotta be a specific reason. I cant see why they couldnt make the plates 50lbs. Id do away with the 35s, but keep the rest.

    yeah i think its because of the kilo - lb conversion thing.
