    chest

    i read somewhere that incline presses and flies are better for chest development than flat presses and flies. is this true? i know both are probably important, but if you were to devote more energy to one or the other, which would be best?

    One isn't necessarily better than the other. They both target primarily the same muscle but from different angles. You would be well served to implement both movements into your routine.

    There is no best exercise for development. You should periodically change around exercises to challenge different muscles more at varying joint angles. Anyone who says that is just regurgitating common gym wisdom, which is to say, completely lacking in the wisdom department.

    Inclines do hit the upper part of the chest a bit more than flat work. Insertions, origins and actions seem to support this.

    Is their an upper chest? No, but I do not believe that was what the poster was implying.

    no, i wasn't implying that. i looked again and i can't find the article, but it said incline work was best for "total" chest development.

    the reason for the question is that i lift hard and heavy on chest day. if i start with flat, i'm shot out by the time i get on incline. if i start with incline, i'm shot out by the time i get to flat. so i was wondering which would be best to start with, since that is the one that gets about 70% of my energy. i guess i could just alternate week by week.

    Technically, there is an upper chest muscle:

    Pectoralis Major (Clavicular Head)

    However, all muscles in the chest work as one. Altering the bench angle can put the slightest bit more emphasis on particular regions, but, at the end of the day, you're really only providing a variety in stumulus for the entire chest.

    Presses = compound

    Flies = isolation
