Sometimes the truth can rape your entire belief system.

Nope, not an elite bodybuilder so won't be training like one.

I'm not an elite bodybuilder either, but Cutler's "CEO Muscle" is worth a look.

JAYS LEG WORKOUT LEG EXT 2* 4-5 12R LEG PRESSES 4 OF15-20 HACK SQUAT 3 OF 10 SMITH MACHINNE SQUATS 5 OF6-10 LUNGES WITH DUMB OR BARBLEG CURLS 3 OF 10-12 thats what I do from his routine I left out unlateral leg ext 4 of 10 stiff legged deadlifts 3 OF 8-10 and / UNILATERAL LEG CURLS /STANDING ONE LEGGED LEG CURLS

The problem i have with most bodybuilding books is that all the stuff upto the actual training programs is usually great advice, their explanations of exercises are good, the general principles of - be healthy, lift hard, have a spotter etc etc - are good, usually v. high quality images and stuff. Then the training programs are the biggest load of horse shit i've ever seen, haha.
The one exception in my experience has been Mike Mentzer's books. His training programs work like a charm.

^Have you ever checked out any of Ellington Darden's books?
Amazon.com: Ellington Darden: Books

I read "The New HIT Training" which is on the top on that amazon page, it was alright but not a shade on Mentzer's Heavy Duty books. Darden seems to take more from Arthur Jones than Mentzer in that book, i thought. It had a nice history of HIT style training in there though, which was a good read. Haven't read any of the others though.

Jones was Darden's mentor, right? Liked the one quote by Darden, something about high volume versus briefer and more intense workouts. The appeal of Schwarzenegger promoting, what, six exercises per body part and 4-6 sets per exercise?
Darden stated that regardless of the accuracy or effectiveness of brief and intense, people would always look at Arnold and say that high volume is the ticket.
Hard to ignore the marketing appeal of Arnold in his prime, but Darden was no slouch for physique, imo.
His Web site: Dr. Darden's H.I.T.
The Darden book I want to pick up is "The New Bodybuilding for Old-School Results".

No doubt he looked great! The thing about Arnold is that he would have gained whatever he did in the gym. He had the genetics and the drive to succeed, so would succeed no matter what.
For us mere mortals, i think HIT > Volume any day. Or at least brief, focused workouts if not HIT to failure stuff.
Also, Casey Viator is fucking awesome.

i think it depends a lot on the person. I need volume to grow, it must be my muscle fiber concentration. I was really skinny as a kid and built more for speed and endurance, so IMO people like that need a bit of volume to really force the muscle to grow.

I've found i can gain on both, but i'd sure as shit rather spend 30 minutes in the gym instead of 120, lol. Though, my definition of "volume" is 20 sets maximum, and thats on a fullbody split.
I've tried typical bodybuilding routines - hated it, and saw little to no gains for a greater investment of time. Just don't like doing 6 exercises on chest, because by the end of that session i can't give it my all. Not even close.
I am a believer in the principle "everything works, nothing works forever", though.

Im on the same boat as the captain hard gainer requiring high volume tall and skinny as kid.I too do about 20-23 sets per bodypart once a week 5 on 2 off sometimes do bis twice but 2nd bi workout will be about 15 sets. If I feel a muscle is totally recuped I may hit it twice.Usually bis tris legs or chest recupe faster sometimes for me
