    overall fit

just watched a short video on a MMA fight between heavyweight tim sylvia and who they call the strongest man in the world Mariusz Pudzianowski.
i was amazed how in as little as 4-5 minutes MP was totally gassed.
i have read so many articles saying that super heavy lifting will help cardio as well as the strength... i never believed this. how could walking with a big 200 pound boulder 30 feet, or pulling a truck for a minute or throwing kegs for 40 seconds help with endurance??
this guy is a bear on the strongman stuff, i like this guy, but i was shocked how fast he pooped out ..
like the true experts always said, do both endurance and strength training as hard as you can to be overall fit.
Mariusz Pudzianowski tapped out a minute into round 2.
    totally out of breath.

I just watched this on youtube, yeah i a big fan of mariusz but i thought he threw himself in the deep end fighting tim sylvia in his 2nd fight. Syvia although he lost a few recently has done this for years and was once the ufc champion, mariusz should have had a few more fights before trying to fight at that level he was exhausted wasnt he? He was clealry carrying too much muscle for 3 x 5 minute rounds. Big, strong and impressed by his chin but didnt have the fitness endurance and pain endurance of a seasoned MMA fighter, who would after one fight. Good post.
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

more muscle you have, the more oxygen you use.
in mma there is 3 different cardios
    stand up cardio
    wrestling cardio
    jiu jitsu cardio
you can box and wrestle all day and when you do jiu jitsu you will gas. that goes for any two of three. thats why mma = chess vs boxing = checkers
to many guys focus on lifting more than accually sparring. sparring in every aspect is more important than anything in mma

You can't compare the two by any means. Tim Sylvia trains for MMA and has done so for many many years. Mariusz executes completely different type of training. Put Sylvia in a Strong man's competition and I bet you he'll gas out in any event before any of those other guys do. Also, keep in mind, this was Mariusz's 1st MMA big fight and as with any MMA debut there are many nerves and anxiety involved before and during the fight which takes a lot out of a fighter. Mariusz was probably stiff and tense all fight because he doesn't train for it while Sylvia knows how to be relaxed in there and conserve his energy. Watch the debut of most MMA fighters and notice how they gas out before their seasoned opponent. It has lots to do with 1st fight gitters and anxiety.
