    confused

everyone says stay away from once a week type routines unless you are on gear etc. i have always tried to upper/lower type splits so each muscle group gets hit twice a week approx. i have a friend he is not on gear, i havent seen him for a while he is a uni mate, he's been working out 3 months and he's massive i asked what he did and he showed me his routine, it was exactly what people have said stay away from ie monday is chest day, tuesday is bicep day etc etc he does 16 sets for each muscle group just once a week but he has become big really quick, granted he is a mesomorphic type shape and im more ecto so its prob easier for him but am i missing something?!

Bodypart splits are not useless. They are, however, somewhat sub-optimal.

You don't know that your friend is not on gear BTW.
Wondering where to start? Confused? "Homework 1" will get you started.

Theres nothing to say bodypart splits won't make you grow, they just won't make you grow as well as other programs with more rest and less overtraining. They are also very prone to causing muscular imbalances and injuries.

And do you really think your friend is going to admit being on gear?

Shooting heroine can help you lose weight, but proper diet with moderate exercise is the better option.

Plenty of approaches work for anything, but there's always the better, more reasonable options.

Since when has stuff being illegal stopped anybody from doing anything?

And if by "work" you mean make you get bigger, sure. Steroids or not weight training is going make you get bigger.

Perhaps he has good genetics for putting on muscle.

Perhaps his bone structure and tendon lengths make a little mass look like a lot more.

Perhaps he eats twice as much as you, so he will bulk up quicker.

    Maybe he just trains harder.

If he's not been training long it's also possible the double whammy of losing fat and putting on muscle at the same time makes an otherwise acceptable gain in muscle mass look twice as drastic. Newbie gains are amazing.

He also might be playing with the truth and taking a highly potent, but nonetheless completely legal prohormone. It's not a steroid, but its damn close.

I also don't know your definition of "massive", or how he looked before, so it could be that he's put on a completely normal amount of muscle for three months of training.

As for the program - no, it doesn't sound magical or special or even at all well thought out.

see thats what i thought, it sounds like the programs everyone has advised to stay away from he just seems to have grown quite a bit, what do you recommend being the most effective way to train ie how many sets per week per muscle group split into how many times per week. ie each muscle group roughly twice a week with a total of 12 sets per muscle group per week, this is obviously taking away nutrition and just looking at a training program.

IMO hypertrophy has a lot more to do with diet than training. Training simply provides the stimulus but diet really creates the growth. There are a lot of ways to train and gain mass. But none of these training programs mean anything without a caloric surplus.

Hell you could probably do nothing but squatting, deadlifting, and benching 3-4 days a week, eat like a horse, and gain a ton of mass.
