The best diet for gaining muscle, I've found, is a 30/40/30 ration of protein/carbs/fat.

Start here: Take your bodyweight x 20... That's how many calories a day you should be eating. Start weighing yourself once a week. If you're not gaining muscle, either your training routine sucks or you need to eat more calories. So bump up your calories by 200 each week until you start making gains.

    Does that make sense?

You should be getting your protein from sources like:
    - chicken
    - eggs
    - fish
    - lean beef

    Carbs from things like:
    - oatmeal
    - 100% whole wheat bread
    - potatos
    - yams
    - brown rice

    Fat from sources like:
    - Flax seed oil
    - Olive oil
    - Seeds
    - Nuts
    - Avocados

I realize that some topics may have some overlap to them, but seriously man did you not get a hint when you read over the "Diet and Nutrition" section?

WeightGainNet, what's so special about 30/40/30?

That's the best ratio I've found that works for me. I've done tons of testing. But everyone's body is different so others may respond differently. I am an ectomorph, and I find that other ectomorphs do well on this diet too.

But again, it's not set in stone and the ratio something you can play around with.

The problem with set macros like that is it pre-determins protein intake, when this might give a person too much, not enough, or just simply an amount that's not optimal.

I think a person should always first calculate their protein, and then keep that number consistent. Bulking or cutting, I keep my protein the same. From there after I can decide how to split up my carbs and fat according to my energy needs/training goals.

Exactly. Otherwise, if you use a ratio approach you end up dropping protein when you're cutting. Not smart.
